Chapter 12 - THE SHOT

For one second, nobody moved.
Then Hannah screamed my name.
Emergency lights flashed on.
Grant stood near the barrels, staring at the blood spreading across his sleeve.
Daniel had shot him in the shoulder after Grant pulled a pistol from his coat.
Federal agents rushed in.
Grant stumbled backward and raised the gun again.
Hannah grabbed a metal chain and struck his wrist.
The pistol fell.
Agents forced him to the ground.
He screamed that Hannah had attacked him.
Even then.
Even with cameras recording, agents surrounding him, and his own gun lying at his feet, Grant tried to rewrite reality.
“She’s unstable!” he shouted. “She tried to kill me!”
Hannah stood above him, shaking.
Then she said the words he had spent years preventing her from saying.
“No one believes you anymore.”
Grant stopped struggling.
I wrapped my arms around my daughter.
She held me tightly, but her face remained distant.
The truth about her father still stood between us.
On the way out, agents discovered a locked office at the back of the warehouse.
Inside were twenty:three:year:old accounting records, photographs, and audio tapes.
Richard Holloway had never destroyed the evidence.
He had hidden it.
One tape contained his voice discussing David’s car.
Another voice belonged to a mechanic who had died years earlier.
“The brakes will fail on the expressway,” the mechanic said.
Richard answered,
“Make sure his wife and daughter aren’t in the car.”
Hannah listened without moving.
Then she looked at me.
“You knew enough to be afraid.”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because after your father died, I received a photograph of you walking home from school.”
Her anger disappeared.
“What?”
“There was a note. It said the next accident would take both of us.”
Hannah’s face softened, but the hurt remained.
I reached for her hand.
She stepped back.
“I understand why you were afraid.”
Then she added,
“But I don’t know if I can forgive you for letting me live inside that lie.”
Before I could answer, agents opened another box.
Inside were documents showing that Richard Holloway had not acted alone.
One signature appeared beneath his on every order.
May you like
Margaret Holloway.
