Chapter 9 - WHAT MADISON SAW

I wanted to stop everything.
The questions.
The cops.
The phones.
The secrets.
I wanted to put Madison in bed, make hot chocolate, and pretend she had never said those words.
Instead, I sat beside my eight-year-old daughter while a child-interview specialist asked her what she remembered.
No leading questions.
No pressure.
Just patience.
Madison held my hand.
“I heard Daddy yelling.”
“What was he saying?”
“I don’t remember all of it.”
“That’s okay.”
“He said, ‘Get out of my house.’”
“To who?”
“I couldn’t see yet.”
“Then what happened?”
“I went downstairs.”
I squeezed her fingers.
She continued.
“Grandma was near Daddy’s office. Mr. Trevor was there.”
“And Uncle Ryan?”
“No.”
Ryan looked away.
Madison swallowed.
“Daddy saw me.”
“What did he do?”
“He told me to go upstairs.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“What happened next?”
“I stood behind the railing.”
“You kept watching?”
She nodded.
“Mr. Trevor left.”
Evelyn lifted her head.
“What?”
Madison looked at her.
“You stayed.”
Evelyn’s face went gray.
The interviewer calmly asked, “What happened then?”
“Daddy and Grandma were arguing.”
I could barely breathe.
“Did you hear what they said?”
“Grandma said, ‘You’ll ruin him.’ Daddy said, ‘Ryan ruined himself.’”
Evelyn began sobbing.
Ryan stood in the kitchen doorway like someone had punched through his chest.
Madison continued.
“Then Grandma grabbed Daddy.”
My entire body went cold.
“Where?”
“His arm.”
“Then?”
“He pulled away.”
“What happened?”
Madison closed her eyes.
“He went backward.”
No one spoke.
“He hit the railing by the basement stairs.”
I remembered that railing.
Old wood.
Daniel had been meaning to replace it.
“It broke.”
Her voice cracked.
“He fell.”
Evelyn covered her face.
“Oh, God.”
I stared at her.
“You pushed him?”
“No!”
Evelyn cried harder.
“I grabbed him. I swear, I just grabbed his arm.”
Madison looked at her.
“You didn’t call 911.”
Everything stopped.
Evelyn stared at her granddaughter.
Madison’s voice was barely audible.
“Daddy was making sounds.”
My stomach twisted.
“He was alive?”
Madison nodded.
I stood.
The chair crashed behind me.
“You left him alive at the bottom of the stairs?”
Evelyn shook her head wildly.
“No. No, Sarah, listen—”
“You left my husband there?”
“I panicked!”
“HE WAS ALIVE!”
Police officers moved closer.
Ryan caught my shoulders.
“Sarah.”
I shoved him away.
“Don’t touch me!”
Evelyn screamed through tears.
“I was going to call!”
“But you didn’t!”
“Trevor came back!”
Silence.
I stared at her.
“What?”
She was shaking so hard she could barely speak.
“I was standing over Daniel. I had my phone in my hand.”
“And?”
“Trevor walked back inside.”
“Why?”
“He said he forgot his keys.”
“Then what?”
Evelyn’s eyes lifted to mine.
“He saw Daniel.”
I felt sick.
“He took my phone.”
“Why?”
“He said if I called an ambulance, I’d go to prison.”
“And you believed him?”
“He said he would handle it.”
My voice dropped.
“What did ‘handle it’ mean?”
She started crying harder.
“I didn’t know.”
Madison suddenly whispered:
“I do.”
Everyone looked at her.
“I saw Mr. Trevor go downstairs.”
My heart stopped.
“What did he do?”
May you like
Madison looked at me.
“He put his hand over Daddy’s mouth.”
