Chapter 14 - WHAT DANIEL LEFT BEHIND

Three days later, we went home.
Police had finished searching the house.
Trevor was in custody.
Detective Miller had been suspended and charged with bribery, obstruction, and evidence tampering.
Evelyn faced charges too.
Not murder.
But failure to render aid, obstruction, and conspiracy after the fact.
Ryan survived.
The bullet passed through his shoulder without hitting an artery.
For once, luck had chosen him.
Madison carried the silver key.
“Daddy said home.”
I looked around.
“Could mean anything.”
She walked toward Daniel’s office.
Of course she did.
My husband had spent more hours in that room than anywhere else.
I followed.
Madison opened drawers.
Checked the desk.
Looked behind books.
Then she stopped near the old wooden model house Daniel had built with her the previous Christmas.
A tiny two-story house.
Painted white.
Crooked chimney.
Madison had written CARTER HOUSE underneath in purple marker.
She turned it over.
A small lock sat underneath.
My breath caught.
The key fit.
Inside was a compartment.
A letter.
One envelope said:
SARAH.
The other:
MADDIE.
I sat down before opening mine.
Sarah,
If you’re reading this, then I failed to fix things before they reached you.
I’m sorry.
I told myself I was protecting you.
The truth is, I was ashamed.
Ryan was stealing.
Trevor was stealing more.
Mom was covering for Ryan.
And I kept thinking I could solve everything without admitting how ugly my family had become.
That was pride, not protection.
I cried before I reached the next line.
I love you.
I love Madison.
Nothing I found mattered more than getting home to you both.
If I don’t get that chance, please don’t spend the rest of your life standing in the place where I died.
Live.
Be angry with me if you need to.
Then live anyway.
I pressed the page against my mouth.
Madison sat beside me with her own letter.
“Can I read it?”
“That one’s yours.”
She opened it.
Her lips moved as she read.
Then tears finally came.
Not quiet tears.
Not the frozen shock from the funeral.
She sobbed.
I pulled her against me.
“What did he say?”
She handed me the paper.
Princess,
If you ever find this, I need you to know something.
Being brave does not mean you’re never scared.
It means you tell the truth even when your voice shakes.
And if I’m not there to tell you every day, then remember this:
You were the best thing I ever did.
Not my company.
Not my buildings.
You.
Always you.
Madison buried her face against my chest.
“I miss him.”
“I know.”
“I want him back.”
“I know.”
For once, I didn’t try to give her a better answer.
There wasn’t one.
An hour later, Claire arrived.
She carried a folder.
“What’s that?”
“Daniel’s estate documents.”
I wiped my face.
“More secrets?”
“One.”
I almost laughed.
“Of course.”
She sat across from me.
“Daniel changed the company structure two days before he died.”
“What does that mean?”
“He removed Ryan’s signing authority.”
“That makes sense.”
“And he transferred controlling ownership of his shares into a trust.”
“For Madison?”
Claire shook her head.
“For you.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“You now control fifty-eight percent of Carter Structural.”
I wanted nothing to do with the company.
Not then.
Maybe never.
Claire continued.
“There’s one more document.”
She slid a paper toward me.
Daniel had written instructions underneath his signature.
IF RYAN CONFESSES EVERYTHING AND COOPERATES, SARAH MAY DECIDE WHETHER HE EVER RETURNS.
I stared at those words.
Even dead, Daniel had left the hardest decision to me.
And the next morning, Ryan called from the hospital.
May you like
“Sarah,” he said.
“I need to tell you the one thing Daniel never found out.”
