Chapter 4: Home at Last

Six months later...
The old porch looked different.
The broken hinge had finally been repaired.
Bright flowers lined the steps.
A swing hung beneath the oak tree.
Children's laughter filled the yard almost every afternoon.
Drew's cast was gone.
He still limped slightly, but physical therapy had helped.
Lily had gained twelve healthy pounds.
Her cheeks were round again.
She laughed often.
Sometimes so loudly the neighbors laughed with her.
Inside the courthouse, Judge Eleanor Brooks smiled as she signed the final order.
"Peter Calder..."
She looked at him warmly.
"As of today, you are officially the legal father of Drew and Lily Calder."
Peter couldn't speak.
He simply nodded.
Drew reached for his hand.
Lily climbed into his lap.
Outside the courthouse, reporters asked questions about the abuse case.
Peter ignored every microphone.
His attention stayed on the children.
That evening, the three of them visited Aaron's grave.
Peter knelt beside the headstone.
"I couldn't save them before."
His voice trembled.
"But they're safe now."
Drew placed two wildflowers on the grave.
Lily carefully set down her favorite stuffed rabbit.
Then Drew looked toward the sky.
"We're okay now, Dad."
A gentle breeze rustled through the trees.
Peter closed his eyes.
For the first time in three years...
The crushing weight of guilt finally lifted.
He realized something Aaron had known all along.
Family wasn't the people who shared your blood.
Family was the people who refused to let you crawl through life alone.
Peter took both children by the hand.
Together, they walked away from the cemetery.
Not as survivors.
But as a family.
May you like
And this time...
They were finally going home.
