Chapter 2: The House of Secrets

The police arrived at Reena's house less than twenty minutes after leaving the hospital.
The small two-story home looked perfectly ordinary.
Fresh flowers lined the front porch.
Children's toys were scattered across the yard.
A family photo still hung beside the front door.
It looked like the home of a loving mother.
Officer Melissa Grant had investigated child abuse for sixteen years.
She had learned one painful lesson.
The worst monsters rarely looked like monsters.
She knocked.
No answer.
She knocked again, louder.
A curtain twitched upstairs.
Someone was home.
When Reena finally opened the door, she wore yoga pants, a neat sweater, and an expression of practiced confusion.
"Is something wrong, Officers?"
"We're here to conduct a welfare investigation involving Drew and Lily."
For less than half a second...
Her smile disappeared.
Then it returned.
"Oh my God."
She placed a hand over her chest.
"They ran away again?"
Officer Grant didn't answer.
"May we come inside?"
Reena hesitated.
Only for a moment.
"Of course."
The officers stepped into a spotless living room.
Every surface sparkled.
Family portraits decorated the walls.
One photograph caught Grant's attention.
Aaron smiled proudly between Drew and Lily.
The picture couldn't have been more than four years old.
The children looked healthy.
Happy.
Someone had worked very hard to preserve that illusion.
"We'll need to look around."
Reena forced another smile.
"I have nothing to hide."
Officer Grant noticed the basement door almost immediately.
A heavy steel deadbolt had been installed...
On the outside.
She stared at it.
"Why is there a lock out here?"
Reena laughed nervously.
"Oh, that's old. The kids used to play downstairs."
Grant slowly turned the deadbolt.
It clicked open.
The smell hit them first.
Stale air.
Mold.
Human waste.
One officer switched on his flashlight.
The basement wasn't a storage room.
It was a prison.
A stained mattress lay on the concrete floor.
Two tiny blankets.
Plastic cups.
Empty food containers.
Scratch marks covered the inside of the door.
Near the corner stood a rusted bucket.
Officer Grant stopped breathing for a second.
One of the detectives quietly whispered,
"My God..."
Another officer pointed upward.
"There."
A tiny security camera had been hidden inside an old smoke detector.
Technicians removed the memory card immediately.
Within minutes, they played the footage.
No one in the room spoke.
Video after video showed Drew carrying Lily.
Sharing tiny pieces of bread.
Rocking her to sleep.
Counting footsteps above them.
Sometimes the children remained locked inside for twelve...
Fourteen...
Even eighteen hours.
One recording showed Lily crying from hunger.
Drew tore his own sandwich in half and pretended he wasn't hungry.
Another showed him wrapping his jacket around her because the basement had become freezing overnight.
Officer Grant quietly wiped away tears.
She had children of her own.
No child should ever have to become a parent.
Then another officer called from upstairs.
"You need to see this."
Inside Reena's bedroom sat her unlocked laptop.
Messages filled the screen.
Most were between Reena and her boyfriend, Kyle.
They're finally learning obedience.
The boy keeps trying to protect the girl.
Break him first.
She cries less when she's hungry.
Good. Food is expensive anyway.
Officer Grant felt her stomach twist.
Months.
They had been doing this for months.
One final message appeared.
If Aaron's brother keeps showing up, tell him the kids are sleeping again.
Grant closed the laptop.
"Get a warrant."
She looked directly at Reena.
"You're under arrest."
For the first time...
Reena stopped pretending.
Her face hardened.
"They're just kids."
"They'll forget."
Officer Grant stepped closer.
"No."
Her voice was ice.
May you like
"They won't."
"And neither will we."
