Chapter 9 - TWO SONS

Police reached the Grant house minutes too late.

Noah was gone.

Daniel had been injured trying to stop the abduction.

Rachel called me screaming.

I had no words for her.

Eli and Noah were both missing.

Two boys whose lives had been switched before they could speak.

Now the man who arranged it had taken both.

Rebecca finally talked.

Keller had spent years building a criminal network around birth records.

But the network was collapsing.

Investigators were reopening old cases.

Keller needed money to disappear.

Luke’s original switch gave him leverage over several wealthy people involved in the old scheme.

Noah and Eli were living proof.

Their DNA could establish what had happened.

Keller planned to trade that proof for millions.

“Where?”

Bennett asked.

Rebecca smiled without humor.

“You think he told me?”

Bennett leaned closer.

“You helped him steal children.”

“And he left me chained to a radiator.”

“Then help us.”

Rebecca stared at the floor.

Finally she whispered, “The lake house.”

Luke knew which one.

A property owned through a shell company near Lake Briar.

Police surrounded it before dawn.

I wasn’t allowed anywhere near it.

Neither was Rachel.

We waited together in a command vehicle two miles away.

June slept in a secured carrier beside me.

Rachel held Noah’s baseball cap.

At 5:42 a.m., Bennett’s radio came alive.

Movement inside.

Two children confirmed.

My heart nearly stopped.

Then a gunshot cracked through the radio.

Rachel grabbed my hand.

Another voice shouted.

“Officer down!”

I couldn’t breathe.

Seconds stretched into years.

Then Bennett’s voice came through.

“Both boys located.”

I started sobbing.

“Are they okay?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Then:

“Eli is safe.”

Rachel looked at me.

“And Noah?”

Static.

“Repeat.”

More static.

Then Bennett appeared outside the command vehicle.

Her face told us something was wrong.

Rachel stood.

“Where’s my son?”

Bennett opened the door.

“Noah is alive.”

Rachel almost collapsed.

“But?”

“He’s injured.”

Keller had tried to escape with Noah.

During the struggle, Noah fell down several wooden steps.

He had a broken arm and concussion.

Eli had done something nobody expected.

He had attacked Keller.

Not with a weapon.

With a fire extinguisher.

He had pulled the pin, sprayed Keller in the face, grabbed Noah, and screamed until police reached them.

When I finally saw Eli, he ran toward me.

I forgot the surgery.

I forgot the pain.

I wrapped my arms around him.

“Mom.”

“I’ve got you.”

“I knew you’d come.”

That broke me.

Behind him, officers led Keller out in handcuffs.

He looked at Eli.

Then at me.

And smiled.

“You think you know everything now?”

I stared at him.

He stopped beside me.

“You don’t even know why Luke chose you.”

Bennett pushed him forward.

May you like

But the words remained.

Why Luke chose me.
