Chapter 1 - THE WRONG BABY

Luke backed away.

All the color disappeared from his face.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then the young mother at the doorway rushed toward the bassinet.

“That’s my daughter!”

Her voice cracked through the room.

“That’s my baby!”

Nurse Camille Ross immediately stepped between her and the bassinet.

“Ma’am, please don’t touch the infant yet.”

“That is my child!”

“I believe you.”

Camille kept her voice calm.

“But until we confirm both identification bands, nobody touches either baby.”

My incision burned as I forced myself higher against the hospital pillows.

“Where is June?”

Luke looked at me.

He had always been good at looking calm when everyone else was scared.

That calm was gone now.

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

“Where is our daughter?”

Eli stood beside my bed.

His face was pale.

A red mark was already appearing where Luke had grabbed his shoulder.

Luke noticed me looking at it.

“He panicked.”

“You shoved him.”

“He accused me of switching babies.”

“Did you?”

Luke stared at me.

That tiny hesitation was enough.

My stomach turned.

Camille touched the emergency button on the wall.

“Security to postpartum room 418.”

Luke stepped toward her.

“That isn’t necessary.”

Camille moved between him and the door.

“It became necessary when an infant identification band failed verification.”

The other mother was crying now.

“My name is Hannah Cole.”

She pointed at the baby.

“My daughter is Olivia.”

Camille checked the bassinet card.

The card said JUNE MARSHALL.

But the ankle band told a different story.

Camille scanned it again.

The screen flashed.

OLIVIA COLE.

My hands went numb.

“That’s not June.”

Nobody answered me.

I turned toward Eli.

“Sweetheart.”

He looked terrified.

“Tell me exactly what you saw.”

Luke cut in.

“Claire, don’t encourage this.”

“Be quiet.”

Luke froze.

In twelve years of marriage, I had never spoken to him that way.

I didn’t care.

I looked at my son.

“Tell me.”

Eli swallowed.

“I woke up because Dad came into the room.”

“When?”

“Before it got light outside.”

Luke shook his head.

“He was half asleep.”

Eli continued.

“You thought I was asleep.”

His voice trembled.

“You took June out.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“Out where?”

“Into the hallway.”

Hannah covered her mouth.

Eli pointed toward the door.

“I followed him.”

Luke stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

Camille blocked him.

“Stay where you are.”

Footsteps thundered down the hallway.

Two hospital security officers appeared.

Behind them came another nurse and a woman in a navy suit.

The woman introduced herself as Dr. Miriam Hale, the hospital’s director of maternal services.

Camille spoke quickly.

“Possible infant identification breach involving two newborns.”

Dr. Hale’s expression hardened.

“Lock the unit.”

One of the security officers reached for his radio.

“Locking postpartum.”

Luke laughed nervously.

“This is insane.”

Dr. Hale looked at him.

“If this is a misunderstanding, the records will establish that.”

Then she turned toward Eli.

“What did you see?”

Eli looked at me first.

I nodded.

He took a breath.

“Dad pushed June’s bassinet into the nursery hallway.”

“Then what?”

“There was another bassinet there.”

Hannah whispered, “Olivia.”

Eli nodded.

“He moved both babies.”

Luke suddenly lunged toward the door.

Security caught him before he made it two steps.

“Get off me!”

His voice changed completely.

No calm.

No explanation.

Just panic.

The officers forced his hands behind his back.

“Sir, stop resisting.”

“I haven’t done anything!”

Dr. Hale looked toward the second nurse.

“Find June Marshall immediately.”

The nurse hurried away.

I grabbed Camille’s wrist.

“Please.”

My voice broke.

“Find my baby.”

Camille squeezed my hand.

“We will.”

Minutes crawled past.

Every sound in the hallway made me look toward the door.

Then the nurse returned.

She was pushing a bassinet.

A newborn slept inside.

My heart recognized her before my mind did.

The tiny patch of dark hair.

The little crease beside her left ear.

The pink blanket I had wrapped around her after feeding her.

“June.”

I started crying.

Camille checked the identification band before bringing her closer.

The clasp was open.

My relief vanished.

Dr. Hale scanned it.

The screen flashed red.

June’s identification band had been tampered with too.

Luke stopped struggling.

He stared at the floor.

Hannah’s baby was returned to her only after three separate identity checks.

June was placed beside me.

I touched her tiny cheek.

She opened her mouth and made the softest sound.

I should have felt nothing but relief.

Instead, I looked at my husband.

“Why?”

Luke raised his head.

His eyes were wet.

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“Try me.”

He said nothing.

Eli suddenly tugged on Camille’s sleeve.

“There’s something else.”

Every adult in the room turned toward him.

Eli reached into the pocket of his hoodie.

He pulled out a small plastic hospital access card.

“I found this after Dad switched them.”

Dr. Hale took it.

Her expression changed instantly.

“That’s not your father’s card.”

Luke closed his eyes.

Dr. Hale turned it over.

A staff name was printed across the front.

NURSE REBECCA VALE.

Camille stared at it.

“Rebecca isn’t working today.”

Dr. Hale looked at her.

“No.”

May you like

Then her face went pale.

“She was fired three months ago.”
