Chapter 3 - RACHEL’S WARNING

Lucas forgot everyone else in the room.

His hands shook as he opened the envelope.

“Lucas, don’t,” Vanessa said.

He looked at her.

That was enough.

“You knew this letter existed.”

“No.”

“Then why are you scared?”

“I’m scared because you’re destroying our wedding over a dead woman’s paranoia.”

Lucas unfolded the page.

Rachel’s handwriting hit him harder than any punch.

Lucas,

If you are reading this, either Emma is old enough to know everything, or someone I trusted has betrayed me.

Do not believe the official story about my accident.

Lucas stopped reading.

His vision blurred.

Grace whispered, “Oh my God.”

“What does it say?” Emma asked.

Lucas lowered the paper.

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Rachel was sick before she died.”

Lucas snapped his head toward her.

“What did you say?”

“She was paranoid.”

“You never met Rachel.”

Silence.

Vanessa realized what she had done.

Lucas stared at her.

“I met you two years after Rachel died.”

Vanessa said nothing.

“How do you know what she was like?”

Diane interrupted.

“Everybody knew Rachel had emotional issues.”

Lucas turned.

“No, they didn’t.”

He looked between the two women.

Something clicked.

“How long did you know my wife?”

Vanessa backed away.

“This is insane.”

Lucas continued reading.

There is a woman named Vanessa Cole.

Lucas stopped again.

Emma’s tiny hand grabbed his sleeve.

Vanessa’s face went gray.

Lucas read the next line aloud.

“If Vanessa Cole ever enters your life, she did not arrive by accident.”

No one moved.

Diane whispered, “Vanessa…”

“Shut up, Mom.”

Lucas looked at his almost-wife.

“You knew Rachel.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“It isn’t what you think.”

“You were in a letter she wrote four years before we met.”

“I can explain.”

“Start talking.”

Vanessa slowly sat.

Diane tried to leave.

Grace blocked the door.

“Not happening.”

Vanessa looked at Emma.

Then at Lucas.

“Rachel and I worked together.”

Lucas shook his head.

“No. Rachel worked for a medical research foundation.”

“So did I.”

“She never mentioned you.”

“Because we weren’t friends.”

Lucas read more.

Rachel described financial records.

Missing donations.

Shell companies.

A private account linked to the foundation.

And a woman named Vanessa who had discovered Rachel investigating.

Lucas looked up.

“You were stealing money?”

“No.”

The letter continued.

Rachel believed someone inside the foundation had redirected millions of dollars.

She had gathered proof.

She planned to go to the authorities.

Three days later, her car went off a mountain road.

Police called it an accident.

Lucas had believed them.

For four years.

Then he reached the final paragraph.

If I die before I can expose them, the evidence is inside this box.

Do not give it to police in our county.

Someone there is helping them.

And Lucas…

Protect Emma.

She saw more than anyone realizes.

Lucas’s blood went cold.

He looked at his daughter.

Emma stared back.

“What did you see?”

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa stood.

“That’s enough.”

Lucas grabbed her wrist.

“You locked her away today because of this.”

“No.”

“You were afraid she remembered something.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with genuine panic.

Then Emma whispered, “I remember the red car.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Lucas crouched.

“What red car?”

Emma looked directly at Vanessa.

“The one that followed Mommy the night she died.”

May you like

Then she added softly,

“Vanessa was driving it.”
