Chapter 5: A Mother’s Last Hope

Even after everything…

I still struggled.

Because he was my son.

People expected me to hate him.

To celebrate his downfall.

But they didn’t understand.

A mother doesn’t stop loving her child because her child becomes someone terrible.

She mourns the child she lost.

The boy who used to bring me flowers.

The teenager who hugged me before leaving home.

The man I thought I raised.

One day, before the trial, Mateo asked to see me.

“I’m sorry, Mom.”

I stared at him.

For years, I waited for those words.

But when they finally came…

They didn’t heal me.

Because some wounds cannot be repaired by apologies.

“Why?” I asked.

His eyes filled with tears.

May you like

“I don’t know.”

And that was the saddest answer.
