Chapter 2: The Hidden Cameras

Michael carried Oliver in his arms while Emily walked beside him, still flinching whenever the back door creaked.
Inside the house, Claire looked up from the living room sofa wearing her usual flawless smile.
"There you are," she said cheerfully. "The children have been playing outside all afternoon."
Michael simply looked at her.
No anger.
No accusation.
Only silence.
It unsettled Claire more than shouting ever could.
"I'll make them dinner," she offered.
Michael shook his head.
"I already did."
That night, after the children finally fell asleep together in Michael's bedroom, he entered his home office.
For years, the security cameras had only covered the front gate and driveway.
Tonight, he opened the archived recordings from the backyard.
His hands froze over the keyboard.
The footage was there.
Day after day.
Claire dragging the crying children outside.
Claire locking the back door.
Emily wrapping her arms around Oliver inside the doghouse.
Oliver crying until he fell asleep from exhaustion.
Emily quietly giving him her own sandwich because he was hungrier.
Michael couldn't breathe.
Every video carried a different date.
Every recording showed the same nightmare.
His children hadn't been abandoned once.
They had survived this...
Again.
And again.
And again.
By sunrise, Michael had copied every file onto three separate hard drives.

Claire still believed she was married to a distracted businessman.
She had no idea she had just become the subject of a criminal investigation.
