Chapter 1: The Doghouse Was Never Their Choice

Michael dropped to one knee so quickly that the damp grass soaked through the fabric of his tailored trousers, but he didn't notice.
His eyes never left his children.
Emily instinctively pulled Oliver closer.
She wasn't protecting him from strangers.
She was protecting him from the man standing in front of them.
That realization pierced Michael deeper than any knife ever could.
"Emily..." he whispered, his voice breaking. "Sweetheart... what are you doing in here?"
The little girl hesitated.
Her lips trembled.
She searched his face as if trying to decide whether it was finally safe to tell the truth.
Oliver buried his face against her shoulder.
"We were hiding," Emily finally answered.
Michael frowned.
"Hiding from who?"
Emily lowered her eyes.
"From... Claire."
Michael's heartbeat stopped.
Claire.
His wife.
The woman he had trusted to care for his children while he spent endless hours expanding Harrison Technologies.
"No..." he muttered.
Emily nodded slowly.
"She said we weren't allowed inside when you were gone."
The words landed with horrifying simplicity.
Michael stared at his daughter.
She wasn't angry.
She wasn't dramatic.
She was simply telling the truth.
"When Oliver cried..."
Emily swallowed hard.
"...she locked us outside."
Michael looked around the yard.
The old doghouse.
The thin blanket.
An empty plastic bottle.
Two half-eaten crackers wrapped carefully inside a paper napkin.
This hadn't happened once.
The children had prepared for it.
This had become routine.
Michael felt his stomach twist.
Everything he believed about his perfect family life collapsed in silence.
