Chapter 13 - THE PROMISE

I had spent twenty-five years knowing exactly where I belonged.
Then two five-year-olds destroyed that certainty in one week.
Ruth received guardianship.
It was the right decision.
The twins moved to Michigan.
I returned to duty.
For eleven days.
Every evening, Lily called.
Every evening, Owen asked one question.
“When are you coming?”
“Soon.”
On the twelfth day, Marco entered my office.
“You're miserable.”
“That's inappropriate, Major.”
“Still true.”
I looked at the paperwork in front of me.
Retirement eligibility.
I had ignored it for three years.
Marco noticed.
“Well.”
“Don't.”
“I didn't say anything.”
“You were about to.”
He smiled.
“You've served twenty-five years, sir.”
“I know.”
“You've given the Army everything.”
“Not everything.”
He understood.
A month later, I drove to Michigan.
I didn't tell the twins.
Ruth opened the door.
She looked at the suitcase in my hand.
Then smiled.
“They're in the backyard.”
Owen saw me first.
He dropped his toy truck.
“COLONEL!”
Lily turned.
They ran.
I barely had time to kneel.
Both hit me at once.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Lily pulled back.
“Are you visiting?”
“No.”
Her smile faded.
I took a breath.
“I retired.”
Owen blinked.
“What does that mean?”
“It means nobody is waiting to take me somewhere else.”
Lily stared at me.
“Ever?”
“Sometimes I'll have places to go.”
Her face fell slightly.
“But I'll always come back.”
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
That night, we ate spaghetti.
Owen spilled milk.
Lily argued about bedtime.
Ruth laughed at me when I tried to enforce military precision during tooth brushing.
It was chaos.
Ordinary chaos.
Beautiful chaos.
For the first time in decades, I wasn't responsible for a unit.
I was responsible for remembering that Lily hated peas.
That Owen needed the hallway light left on.
That both children still woke when they heard cars outside.
And every night before bed, Owen placed his teddy bear beside the pillow.
May you like
Not because it held secrets anymore.
Because it was the last thing his father had given him.
