Chapter 12 - THE MAN ABOVE THEM ALL

General Kane called me before investigators reached him.

“Daniel.”

He hadn't called me that in years.

“Sir.”

“You've become involved in something complicated.”

“Two children were abandoned in an airport.”

“That's not what I mean.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Kane sighed.

“Northstar was legitimate when the contract began.”

“Was?”

“I signed the original agreement.”

“And later?”

“I started asking questions.”

That wasn't what I expected.

Kane explained that he had suspected fraud two years earlier.

But every internal review came back clean.

Someone inside the contracting office was protecting Northstar.

Ethan discovered the same thing independently.

“Why didn't Ethan come to you?”

“He didn't trust anyone.”

“Except me.”

“Yes.”

That answer hurt more than it should have.

“Why?”

Kane paused.

“Because you refused a promotion twelve years ago.”

I remembered.

The promotion required me to support a procurement program I believed was poorly managed.

I refused.

It nearly ended my career.

“Ethan read the report.”

Kane continued.

“He decided a man willing to damage his own career over a signature might be someone he could trust.”

For the first time, Ethan's choice made sense.

Federal investigators eventually identified the final conspirator.

A senior procurement official named Charles Vane.

He had protected Grant's contracts.

Vane was arrested at his home.

The network collapsed within forty-eight hours.

Forty-eight million dollars.

Seven shell companies.

Four arrests.

One murdered father.

And two children who had nearly disappeared into the system while adults fought over money.

The criminal case was finally bigger than us.

But another case remained.

Lily and Owen needed a home.

Ruth filed for permanent guardianship.

I supported her.

Then something happened during the hearing.

The judge asked Lily where she wanted to live.

She looked at Ruth.

Then at me.

“With Grandma.”

Ruth smiled through tears.

Then Lily added,

“But Colonel Steel has to come too.”

The courtroom became quiet.

I looked down.

Ruth reached over and touched my arm.

The judge smiled gently.

“I think that's something Colonel Steel will have to decide.”

May you like

Lily looked directly at me.

Apparently, so did everyone else.
