Chapter 2: The Secret That Destroyed Two Families

I left the church before anyone could stop me.

I walked past the guests.

Past the flowers.

Past the altar where I was supposed to promise forever.

Everyone stared.

Nobody understood why the bride was leaving alone.

Nobody knew that my perfect wedding had been built on a secret.

I drove home without remembering the journey.

When I opened the door, I saw the wedding photographs hanging on the wall.

Pictures of Ethan and me.

Smiling.

Happy.

In love.

Or at least...

I thought we were.

That night, my mother came to my house.

I almost didn't open the door.

But part of me needed answers.

"Why?" I asked when she entered.

She cried immediately.

"I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

She looked at the floor.

"Afraid you would hate me."

I wanted to scream.

"I don't hate you because you loved someone before Dad."

My voice broke.

"I hate you because you let me fall in love with his son."

My mother sat down.

And finally told me everything.

Thirty years earlier, she had loved a man named Michael.

They were young.

They planned a future together.

But Michael disappeared after learning she was pregnant.

My mother believed he abandoned her.

She raised me alone.

Years later, she met my father and built a new life.

But she never forgot Michael.

Then, years after that...

Ethan entered my life.

A charming stranger.

A man who made me believe in love again.

Neither of us knew the connection.

Until my mother discovered an old photograph while helping Ethan prepare a surprise for me.

A photograph of Michael.

And Ethan.

Her past had returned.

And the man I loved was the son of the man who broke her heart.

"But why didn't you tell me?" I whispered.

My mother looked away.

"Because I was selfish."

That honesty hurt more than another lie.

Meanwhile, Ethan sent me dozens of messages.

I ignored all of them.

Until one message appeared.

"I need you to know the whole truth."

I almost deleted it.

But something stopped me.

I met him the next day.

Not as his bride.

Not as the woman who loved him.

But as someone demanding answers.

"Did you know who I was?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

"Did you know my mother was the woman your father loved?"

"No."

"Then why were you meeting her secretly?"

His eyes filled with pain.

"Because I found out my father didn't leave her."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Ethan handed me an old envelope.

Inside was a letter.

A letter written thirty years ago.

From Michael.

To my mother.

My hands trembled as I read it.

Michael hadn't abandoned her.

He had been forced away.

His family threatened him.

They destroyed their relationship.

And he spent the rest of his life believing my mother hated him.

But there was something else.

Something Ethan had discovered.

"My father searched for you until the day he died."

I looked up.

"Why?"

Ethan swallowed.

"Because he believed you had a daughter."

My heart froze.

"He knew about me?"

Ethan nodded.

"He wanted to meet you."

The pain inside me changed.

May you like

Because suddenly this wasn't just about betrayal.

It was about a lifetime of secrets.
