Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Veil

The church was silent after my question.
"Mom?"
That single word felt heavier than all the vows I was supposed to say that day.
My mother stood frozen in front of me.
The same woman who had tucked me into bed as a child.
The same woman who taught me how to recognize true love.
The same woman who cried when Ethan proposed.
Now she was standing beneath the old oak tree, holding the hand of the man I was supposed to marry.
My groom.
My mother.
Together.
Ethan released her immediately.
"Sarah, please..."
I looked at him.
The man who had promised to protect my heart.
The man who had whispered that I was his entire world.
The man who was supposed to be waiting for me at the altar.
"How long?" I asked.
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
Ethan looked away.
That hurt more than any confession.
"How long have you been seeing her?"
His silence answered everything.
My mother stepped forward.
"Sarah, listen to me..."
I laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
"Listen to you?"
I looked at the woman who raised me.
"The person who helped me choose my wedding dress?"
My eyes moved to Ethan.
"The man who held my hand yesterday and told me I was the only woman he would ever love?"
My chest tightened.
"You were both lying to my face."
My mother started crying.
But I couldn't feel sympathy.
Not yet.
Not after discovering the two people I trusted most had destroyed the happiest day of my life.
Then Ethan finally spoke.
"It's not what you think."
Those words.
The same meaningless words people say when they have already been caught.
"Then tell me what it is."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no explanation that could erase what I had seen.
My mother looked down.
"I never wanted you to find out like this."
I stared at her.
"Find out what?"
The silence stretched.
Then she whispered:
"The truth about Ethan."
My heart stopped.
"What truth?"
Ethan's expression changed.
For the first time, I saw fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
My mother looked at him.
Then back at me.
"Sarah... Ethan and I knew each other long before you met him."
The world seemed to tilt.
"What are you talking about?"
My mother took a shaky breath.
"Twenty-nine years ago, I lost someone."
I frowned.
"I don't understand."
She looked directly into my eyes.
"The man I loved before your father."
My stomach dropped.
Then Ethan spoke softly.
"My father."
I froze.
The wind moved through the trees.
The church bells rang in the distance.
But suddenly, none of it felt real.
"My father?" I repeated.
Ethan nodded slowly.
"My father and your mother were together before you were born."
I stared at him.
Trying to understand.
Trying to find logic in something impossible.
"Then why did you marry me?"
Ethan looked destroyed.
"Because I didn't know who you were."
My mother covered her face.
"I found out later."
A terrible thought entered my mind.
"Later?"
I stepped backward.
"When?"
Neither of them answered.
And that was when I realized...
The betrayal wasn't something that started today.
May you like
It started years ago.
Long before I walked down that aisle.
