Chapter 3 — The Truth Daniel Tried to Hide

The next morning, Ethan came back.

But this time, he wasn’t carrying grocery bags.

He was carrying evidence.

Documents.

Emails.

Records.

Proof.

Maya sat beside me on the couch while Ethan explained everything.

Daniel hadn’t simply abandoned me.

He had planned it.

When he learned Sophie might have medical complications, he became afraid.

Not of losing his daughter.

But of losing his comfortable life.

Daniel came from a wealthy family.

He believed having a sick child would damage his career.

So he made a decision.

He left me.

But before leaving, he made sure I had no way to recover.

He blocked job opportunities.

He spread rumors that I was unstable.

He convinced people at Cole Industries that hiring me would create "unnecessary problems."

“He wanted you dependent,” Ethan said.

I looked down at Sophie.

My daughter.

The reason I had survived every impossible day.

“He didn’t just leave us,” I whispered.

“He tried to make sure we stayed broken.”

Ethan nodded.

“But he made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“He underestimated you.”

I looked at him.

“You don’t know me.”

A small smile appeared on his face.

“I know enough.”

“You saw me for five minutes.”

“No.”

He pointed toward Sophie.

“I saw a mother who was starving herself so her baby could eat.”

I looked away.

Because he was right.

I had skipped meals.

I had worn the same clothes for weeks.

I had cried silently in the bathroom because I didn’t want Sophie to hear.

But I never gave up.

That afternoon, Daniel finally showed up.

He stood outside my apartment wearing an expensive suit, pretending to be the same charming man I once loved.

“Emily, we need to talk.”

I stepped outside.

“No.”

His expression changed.

“You don’t understand what happened.”

“I understand everything.”

He looked past me and saw Ethan inside.

His face turned pale.

“Ethan?”

Daniel suddenly looked nervous.

“You know him?”

Ethan walked toward the door.

“Actually, Daniel, I know you.”

Daniel swallowed.

“This isn’t what it looks like.”

“No,” Ethan said calmly.

“It’s worse.”

Daniel tried to laugh.

“You’re really going to believe her?”

Ethan didn’t react.

“I believe the evidence.”

Daniel’s confidence disappeared.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

Ethan handed him a folder.

Inside were copies of every email.

Every message.

Every attempt Daniel made to sabotage my career.

“You’re terminated effective immediately.”

Daniel froze.

“You can’t fire me.”

“I own the company.”

For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.

Then Ethan turned to me.

“But that’s not the only thing.”

He handed me another envelope.

Inside was an official job offer.

Cole Industries — Patient Care Development Specialist.

My dream job.

The job I thought I lost forever.

“I don’t want pity,” I said quietly.

Ethan looked at me.

“This isn’t pity.”

May you like

“Then what is it?”

“A second chance.”
