Chapter 2 â The Man Behind Cole Industries

I stared at the business card sitting on my kitchen table.
ETHAN COLE
CEO â COLE INDUSTRIES
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The man standing in my apartment hallway twenty minutes earlier wasnât just a stranger who answered a desperate text message.
He was the man whose company had rejected me twice.
The same company I had spent weeks researching.
The same company where I had prepared for every interview question, rewritten my resume five different times, and believed I finally had a chance to rebuild my life.
But both times, the rejection email arrived before sunrise.
"After careful consideration, we have decided to move forward with another candidate."
I remembered staring at that message while holding Sophie in the NICU.
I remembered wondering if my life would ever stop falling apart.
Now that same companyâs CEO was standing in my tiny apartment, watching my daughter finally drink a full bottle.
âI donât understand,â I whispered.
Ethan looked at me carefully.
âI know.â
âWhy would the CEO of Cole Industries come to my apartment at midnight with baby formula?â
He glanced at Sophie.
âBecause a baby needed help.â
âThatâs not the whole answer.â
For the first time, his calm expression changed.
There was something behind his eyes.
Something he was hiding.
Before he could respond, his phone rang again.
The name on the screen appeared.
Daniel Carter.
My blood ran cold.
I knew that name.
I had not heard it in months.
But I could never forget it.
Daniel was Sophieâs father.
The man who promised me forever.
The man who held my hand during every ultrasound.
The man who cried when doctors told us our daughter might not survive.
Then, two weeks before Sophie was born, he disappeared.
No calls.
No messages.
No explanation.
He simply left.
Ethan looked at the phone, then at me.
âYou know him?â
My voice barely came out.
âHeâs Sophieâs father.â
The room became silent.
Ethan didnât answer the call.
He just stared at the screen.
âYou need to tell me why heâs calling you.â
Ethan slowly placed the phone down.
âBecause Daniel Carter is the reason you were rejected from Cole Industries.â
My heart stopped.
âWhat?â
Ethan took a deep breath.
âDaniel works in my companyâs executive division.â
I shook my head.
âNo. That doesnât make sense.â
âIt does when you know the truth.â
He opened his phone and showed me a document.
My old job application.
My resume.
And a private note attached.
Do not hire. Personal conflict.
My hands started shaking.
âDaniel did this?â
Ethan nodded.
âHe contacted our hiring department after your first interview.â
âWhy?â
Ethan looked toward Sophie.
âBecause he didnât want you to become financially independent.â
The pain hit harder than I expected.
Not because Daniel left.
I had already survived that.
But because he had been quietly destroying my future while I was struggling to keep our daughter alive.
âWhy are you telling me this now?â
Ethan looked at me.
âBecause I found out today.â
âToday?â
âYes.â
âThen why did you help me before you knew?â
A quiet moment passed.
Then Ethan said something I would never forget.
âBecause my mother was once the woman nobody helped.â
I looked at him.
âMy mother raised me alone. She had nothing. She used to tell me that the smallest act of kindness can change someoneâs entire life.â
May you like
He looked at Sophie sleeping peacefully.
âI never forgot that.â
