Chapter 4 – The Only Family That Remained

Six months later...

The divorce was final.

The criminal investigation uncovered everything.

Ethan had spent nearly two years preparing to leave me.

He and Claire intended to buy a beach house together using my inheritance.

The forged signatures.

The hidden accounts.

The secret company.

Every piece of it unraveled.

Claire accepted a plea deal after agreeing to testify.

She received probation, community service, and lost nearly everything she owned.

Ethan wasn't as fortunate.

He was sentenced to several years in prison for fraud, forgery, and theft.

The court ordered him to repay every dollar he had stolen.

He lost his business.

His reputation.

His freedom.

As for me...

I recovered almost all of my money through court orders and frozen assets.

More importantly, I found peace.

One Saturday afternoon, Noah and I planted flowers in our backyard.

He looked up at me with dirt on his tiny hands.

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"Are you happy now?"

I smiled for the first time in what felt like forever.

"I think I'm learning how to be."

He wrapped his little arms around my waist.

"I'll always stay with you."

Tears filled my eyes.

In the end, I didn't lose my future.

I lost the people who were trying to steal it.

And looking back...

That was the greatest gift my sister ever gave me.

Because betrayal revealed who never deserved a place in my life to begin with.
