Chapter 2 – The Money Trail

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ethan standing shirtless in Claire's living room.

But it wasn't the affair that kept me awake anymore.

It was the missing money.

At six-thirty the next morning, I spread every financial document across my kitchen table while Noah quietly colored dinosaurs beside me, blissfully unaware that his family had collapsed overnight.

The numbers didn't lie.

Over the last fourteen months, more than $287,000 had disappeared from our savings account.

Not all at once.

Small transfers.

Five thousand here.

Eight thousand there.

Never enough to trigger a fraud alert.

Always approved using Ethan's login.

The destination account carried only a partial name.

C. Reynolds.

Claire Reynolds.

My little sister.

My stomach twisted.

I opened our investment portfolio.

Another surprise waited.

The account had been liquidated three weeks earlier.

Every stock.

Every retirement investment.

Everything.

Transferred into a newly formed LLC.

I had never heard of it.

Evergreen Horizon Properties.

Owner: Ethan Brooks.

Co-owner: Claire Reynolds.

My hands began to shake.

This wasn't a reckless affair.

This was a business partnership.

Built with my money.

I immediately called our financial advisor.

"Emma... I assumed you knew."

"Knew what?"

"There was paperwork."

"What paperwork?"

"Ethan said you were stepping away from the investments after inheriting your grandmother's trust."

I froze.

"I never signed anything."

Silence.

Then...

"Oh my God..."

Within twenty minutes, scanned copies landed in my inbox.

Every page carried my signature.

Perfect.

Identical.

Completely fake.

Ethan hadn't only cheated on me.

He had forged my name.

A knock sounded on my front door.

It was my father.

He looked exhausted.

"I came to explain."

I didn't invite him inside.

"Did you know?"

His eyes filled with regret.

"I knew about the affair yesterday."

"But not before?"

He lowered his head.

"No."

"And the money?"

His expression changed instantly.

"What money?"

I handed him the bank statements.

His face turned pale.

"Emma..."

He looked genuinely horrified.

"This... this is criminal."

For the first time since everything happened...

I believed him.

That afternoon, I walked into the office of the best divorce attorney in the county.

By sunset...

Every joint account was frozen.

A forensic accountant had been hired.

And my attorney smiled for the first time.

"If these signatures are forged..."

She looked directly into my eyes.

"Your husband isn't just losing a marriage."

"He's looking at prison."
