Chapter 9 - The Cost of Staying Quiet

“Nobody needed to tell me to read a contract,” I said.

Julian looked at my mother.

It was quick.

But I saw it.

For months, I had mistaken those glances for the easy closeness of two people who cared about me.

Now I knew they were checking their story.

Evelyn took the folder.

“You can send any concerns to my office.”

Mom reached for it.

“Those aren’t yours.”

“They concern my client.”

“This is ridiculous,” Julian said. “We’re getting married in two hours, and you’re treating me like a criminal.”

I stood.

“Then stop acting offended by a lawyer reading legal documents.”

His face flushed.

Lena opened the door.

“The bride needs to get dressed.”

For a second, I thought he might refuse to leave.

Then he straightened his jacket.

“Fine. We’ll talk after the ceremony.”

He kissed two fingers and pressed them toward me.

Our little goodbye.

A gesture that used to make me smile.

After he left, I sat down hard.

Lena locked the door.

“You did it.”

“No,” I whispered. “I almost apologized.”

She crouched in front of me.

“But you didn’t.”

Evelyn placed the folder on the desk.

“We have enough to stop everything here. You don’t owe the guests a performance.”

I knew she was right.

I could send one message.

The wedding is canceled.

Then let the lawyers handle the rest.

But I also knew my mother.

By lunchtime, she would be telling people I had panicked. Julian would be explaining that wealth had made me suspicious. They would turn my refusal into proof that I was cold, unstable, impossible to love.

I had lived inside Stella’s version of events for twenty-six years.

“I want to speak for myself,” I said.

Evelyn studied me.

“Then we keep it brief and factual. And we make sure you can leave safely.”

Beth arranged the room.

Marcus coordinated security.

Lena tested the projector with a blank screen.

Then I stepped into my wedding dress.

For one moment, grief hit so hard I couldn’t move.

I had chosen that dress while Mom cried beside the fitting platform.

Had she already been sleeping with him?

Had she laughed about it afterward?

Lena zipped the back.

“Look at me.”

I met her eyes in the mirror.

“You bought a beautiful dress,” she said. “You’re allowed to wear it while you tell the truth.”

Someone knocked.

Beth opened the door an inch.

May you like

Julian’s father stood outside, holding his phone.

“Mariana,” he said, “why is my son asking me for fifty thousand dollars?”
