Chapter 1 - The Door Was Open

“I’ll marry her tomorrow. Once she signs over control of the company, I’ll divorce her.”

My fiancé said it like he was canceling a dinner reservation.

Then my mother laughed.

I stood outside her bedroom with my car keys cutting into my palm, listening to the two people I loved most decide how to strip my life for parts.

“She won’t read the documents?” Mom asked.

“Mariana trusts me.”

“And if she changes her mind?”

“She won’t. Your daughter has spent her whole life begging somebody to choose her.”

A quiet laugh.

“I chose her. That’s all it took.”

His words landed harder than a slap.

My name was Mariana. I was twenty-six. In fourteen hours, I was supposed to marry Julian.

Instead, I watched through a narrow opening as he pulled my mother against him.

Stella touched his cheek.

“After tomorrow, no more pretending.”

He kissed her.

I almost pushed the door open.

I wanted to drag every lie into the hallway. The proposal. The late meetings. The times Mom had called him the son she never had.

Then Julian spoke again.

“Bring the blue folder to the bridal suite. Tell her the bank needs the signatures before we leave for the honeymoon.”

“The original pages or the replacements?”

“The replacements.”

My hand fell away from the door.

This wasn’t just an affair.

They had paperwork.

I stepped backward, careful not to let my heels touch the hardwood.

Downstairs, a framed engagement photograph sat beside a bowl of fresh roses. In it, Julian was looking at me like I was the only person in the world.

I turned the frame facedown.

Outside, I got into my car and locked the doors.

Only then did I let myself breathe.

My phone lit up.

JULIAN: Sleep tight, beautiful. Tomorrow you’re mine.

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

Then I called the one person Grandma had told me never to lie to.

Our attorney answered on the fourth ring.

“Mariana? What’s wrong?”

“Evelyn, if somebody wanted to steal control of my company, what would they need me to sign?”

Silence.

Then the sound of a door closing.

“Why are you asking?”

I told her.

When I finished, she said, “Do not confront them. Do not sign anything. And tell me exactly where you are.”

“In my car.”

“Drive back to the hotel. I’m coming.”

Before I could hang up, her voice sharpened.

“Mariana, has Julian ever had access to your company email?”

I looked at the phone mount he had installed in my car.

“Yes.”

“How much access?”

May you like

And suddenly, I understood that tomorrow’s wedding might not be the beginning of their plan.

It might be the last step.
