Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S BOX

Vanessa contacted me the following morning.

She wanted to give me something.

We met in the lobby of Claire’s building.

She carried a cardboard storage box.

No makeup.

No gold earrings.

No cream coat.

She looked like someone whose life had collapsed almost as quickly as mine.

“What’s this?”

I asked.

“Everything Daniel left at the apartment.”

I stared at the box.

“Why give it to me?”

“Because he lied to both of us.”

“That doesn’t make us allies.”

“I know.”

At least she understood that.

She placed the box on the table.

“I ended it.”

I said nothing.

“He came to the apartment after meeting with you.”

“What happened?”

“He blamed you.”

Of course.

“He said you were trying to destroy his career.”

I almost smiled.

“I discovered his affair.”

“I know.”

“He destroyed his own marriage.”

“I told him that.”

That surprised me.

Vanessa pushed the box toward me.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“I should have verified his story.”

“Yes.”

“I should have asked more questions.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

For the first time, I respected something about her.

She wasn’t asking me to erase her responsibility just because Daniel had lied.

“What’s inside?”

“Documents.”

“From the safe?”

Her eyes met mine.

“Yes.”

I stopped.

“How did you open it?”

“Daniel gave me the code months ago.”

Inside were bank statements.

Contracts.

Property records.

Copies of passports.

And a small black notebook.

Daniel’s handwriting filled the pages.

Dates.

Amounts.

Account numbers.

Initials.

Marcus examined it that afternoon.

He looked up after twenty minutes.

“This is extraordinary.”

“What?”

“Your husband kept records.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Daniel had documented transfers between accounts.

Some legitimate.

Some questionable.

Some connected directly to my inheritance.

Marcus pointed to a set of initials.

RB.

Rachel Bennett.

Beside it was $742,000.

Then arrows.

Bennett Meridian.

Property.

Brokerage.

International account.

My mother’s inheritance had been split and moved through multiple entities.

But Daniel had left a map.

Claire shook her head.

“People who believe they’re smarter than everyone else love records.”

Marcus turned another page.

Then stopped.

“What?”

I asked.

He pointed.

RCB.

$310,000.

I recognized the initials.

Richard Charles Bennett.

“What is that?”

Marcus kept reading.

“I think your father-in-law borrowed money from the company.”

“Borrowed?”

“On paper.”

“Did he repay it?”

“No.”

Another page.

LCB.

Lauren Catherine Bennett.

$85,000.

Lauren had said she received nothing.

That was another lie.

I leaned back.

Everyone had taken something.

Daniel took my marriage.

Richard took money.

Lauren took money and silence.

Vanessa had taken the version of Daniel he offered her.

And I had unknowingly financed part of the entire arrangement.

Then Claire found an envelope at the bottom of the box.

It contained a draft agreement.

Postnuptial settlement proposal.

My name was already typed into it.

The terms were brutal.

Daniel kept the house.

Daniel kept Bennett Meridian.

I received a fixed settlement.

The document claimed that all investments had been made with my knowledge and consent.

My signature line was blank.

But attached to it was a photocopy of my signature from another document.

Claire stared at it.

“Did you authorize this?”

“No.”

“Did Daniel ever ask you to sign a postnuptial agreement?”

“Never.”

She put the document down carefully.

“This just became much more serious.”

Vanessa looked pale.

“There’s more.”

She reached into her purse.

Then placed a flash drive on the table.

“Daniel left this in the apartment.”

“What’s on it?”

“I don’t know.”

Marcus connected it to an isolated laptop.

Folders appeared.

Taxes.

Properties.

Foundation.

Personal.

Then one folder caught my attention.

RACHEL.

Marcus opened it.

Inside were copies of my financial records.

My passport.

My mother’s estate documents.

And several versions of my signature.

Claire went completely still.

May you like

Daniel hadn’t only been preparing to leave me.

He had been preparing to make it look like I agreed to everything.
