Chapter 11 - THE FAMILY TURNS ON ITSELF

Richard blamed Daniel.

Daniel blamed Richard.

Lauren blamed both of them.

It happened faster than I expected.

Once attorneys became involved, family loyalty disappeared.

Lauren admitted receiving $85,000.

She claimed Richard told her it was a distribution from a legitimate family investment.

Richard claimed Daniel created Bennett Meridian.

Daniel produced emails showing Richard had proposed the company structure.

Then Richard produced messages showing Daniel had requested that my inheritance be included.

Every document they released to protect themselves exposed someone else.

Claire called it mutually assured destruction.

I called it Tuesday.

Then Vanessa provided another piece.

A recording.

She hadn’t secretly recorded Daniel.

It came from a home security camera inside the apartment.

Daniel knew the camera existed.

One evening, three months before O’Hare, Daniel and Richard had argued in the living room.

Vanessa had been away.

The camera captured everything.

Richard stood beside the kitchen island.

“You need to tell Rachel before you move another dollar.”

Daniel paced across the room.

“I will.”

“When?”

“When the timing is right.”

“You’ve been saying that for a year.”

“If I tell her now, she’ll freeze everything.”

“Because it’s her money.”

Daniel stopped.

“It’s marital money.”

“Not all of it.”

“I know what I’m doing.”

Richard shook his head.

“No, you think you do.”

Then came the sentence that destroyed Daniel’s claim that he had innocently misunderstood my consent.

Richard said,

“She doesn’t know about Bennett Meridian.”

Daniel answered,

“And she doesn’t need to yet.”

Claire replayed those words three times.

She doesn’t need to yet.

The recording didn’t make Richard innocent.

Far from it.

But it proved Daniel knew I had never approved the arrangement.

When Daniel’s attorney saw the recording, negotiations changed overnight.

He stopped demanding confidentiality.

He stopped arguing that the investments had been authorized.

He stopped threatening trial.

Then something unexpected happened.

Daniel came to see me.

Not at home.

Not privately.

At Claire’s office.

He looked older.

His hospital suspension remained in effect.

Vanessa was gone.

His father wasn’t speaking to him.

Lauren had given investigators documents.

The family vacation had become a family war.

Daniel sat across from me.

“I loved you.”

I stared at him.

Maybe he expected anger.

Instead I answered honestly.

“I think part of you did.”

He looked surprised.

“You believe that?”

“Yes.”

His eyes filled.

“Then why can’t we—”

“Because love isn’t the only requirement.”

He stopped.

“You can love someone and still destroy their ability to trust you.”

I folded my hands.

“You can love someone and still choose yourself every time it matters.”

“I made terrible mistakes.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You keep calling choices mistakes.”

He looked down.

“Vanessa was a choice.”

“The apartment was a choice.”

“Rome was a choice.”

“The ring was a choice.”

“My inheritance was a choice.”

“Lying to me while I could literally see you standing at Gate 42 was a choice.”

He wiped his eyes.

“I don’t know why I became this person.”

“That’s something you need to figure out without me.”

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he nodded.

Before leaving, he stopped at the door.

“Were you ever going to forgive me?”

I thought about it.

“Forgiveness and reconciliation aren’t the same thing.”

He waited.

“I hope someday I don’t feel anything when I hear your name.”

His face crumpled slightly.

“That’s the forgiveness I want.”

Then he left.

May you like

And strangely, watching him walk away hurt less than watching him kiss Vanessa.

Maybe because this time, I was the one choosing the ending.
