Chapter 14 - THE LAST LIE

David Klein had prepared for years.

That was what made him dangerous.

He didn’t need a gun.

He had paper.

Signatures.

Passwords.

Court seals.

He had used my worst three years to quietly reshape my life.

Detective Torres arrived with federal agents.

She showed me copies.

A falsified guardianship petition.

A psychiatric affidavit claiming I had suffered a breakdown after Rachel’s death.

A fabricated consent form transferring temporary authority over Sophie to a trust.

The trustee was David.

I stared at the signature.

“It looks exactly like mine.”

“It was digitally cloned,” Agent Collins said.

Rachel whispered, “Daniel?”

“No,” Collins answered. “Klein.”

I looked at Rachel.

“You trusted him too?”

“He handled the plane-crash paperwork.”

“That answers the question.”

Torres checked her phone.

“We located him.”

“Where?”

“Private airfield in Van Nuys.”

Sophie stiffened.

I crouched.

“You’re staying with Agent Collins.”

“No.”

“Sophie.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“People keep taking me because everybody keeps telling me to stay somewhere.”

That stopped me.

She was right.

Rachel knelt beside her.

“Sophie, this time—”

“No.”

She backed away.

“I want Daddy.”

I looked at Torres.

She shook her head.

Absolutely not.

Then Sophie said quietly,

“I know something.”

We all looked at her.

“About David.”

“What?”

“He came to the house.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“When Vanessa was there.”

Vanessa.

I called the hospital.

She was awake.

Ten minutes later, Torres had her on speaker.

Vanessa’s voice was weak.

“Yes. David came several times.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“I thought he was Daniel’s lawyer.”

“He was mine.”

“Apparently both.”

Rachel asked, “What did he want?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“The necklace.”

Everyone went silent.

“When?” I asked.

“Two months ago.”

“Before Sophie told anyone Rachel was alive.”

“Yes.”

“So David knew about the encryption key.”

“Yes.”

Torres asked, “Did he ever get access?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Daniel was furious.”

I looked at the silver necklace on the table.

The federal agents had copied the encrypted contents.

The original still sat in evidence packaging.

Then Sophie said,

“That one is fake.”

Every adult turned toward her.

“What?”

She pointed.

“That’s not my necklace.”

Rachel grabbed the bag.

“It looks identical.”

Sophie shook her head.

“Mine has a scratch on the back.”

The evidence necklace was clean.

Torres cursed.

“When was it switched?”

Sophie thought.

“At the hospital.”

My heart stopped.

David.

He had been at the hospital.

Not in person that we remembered.

But he had sent a “legal courier.”

Torres grabbed her radio.

“If Klein has the real key, he can access the account.”

Agent Collins shook his head.

“Not without Rachel’s passphrase.”

David called.

My phone.

Perfect timing.

I answered.

“Ethan.”

His voice was calm.

Same voice that had talked me through funerals, contracts, custody forms.

“David.”

“I’m sorry it became this messy.”

“You erased me as Sophie’s father.”

“Temporarily.”

I almost laughed.

“You’re finished.”

“No.”

He sounded almost bored.

“I’m leaving.”

“You won’t make it out of the country.”

“I don’t need to.”

“What do you want?”

“Rachel.”

She stared at the phone.

David continued.

“She gives me the passphrase. I restore every document regarding Sophie.”

I said, “The FBI can fix those documents.”

“Eventually.”

“You have nothing.”

“I have one thing.”

A video arrived on my phone.

Vanessa’s hospital room.

Empty bed.

Fresh blood on the sheet.

I looked at Torres.

She was already shouting into her radio.

David said,

“I took someone the police still need alive.”

Vanessa appeared on the video.

Weak.

Pale.

Hands tied.

David stepped into frame.

“You have forty-five minutes.”

Rachel whispered,

“Why her?”

David smiled.

“Because Vanessa knows where the original ledgers are.”

The call ended.

Torres looked at Rachel.

“Do you know?”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

May you like

Sophie quietly said,

“I do.”
