Chapter 12 - VANESSA’S CHOICE

By the time tactical officers reached the executive floor, Luke had barricaded the conference wing.

Vanessa was inside with him.

So was Sophie.

I could hear fragments through Sophie’s dropped phone.

Luke: “Give me the necklace.”

Vanessa: “Let her walk out.”

Luke: “You’re in no position to negotiate.”

Vanessa: “Neither are you.”

I looked at Torres.

“What is she doing?”

“Buying time.”

Rachel shook her head.

“He’ll kill her.”

I didn’t know how to feel about that.

Vanessa had hurt Sophie.

She had lied to me.

She had manipulated all of us.

But she had also walked into a room with an armed man to protect the child she had harmed.

People wanted clean categories.

Good.

Bad.

Victim.

Monster.

Life rarely cooperated.

Torres found the building’s internal camera feed.

One conference-room camera still worked.

Luke stood near the windows.

Sophie was behind a chair.

Vanessa stood between them.

Luke held a handgun.

Vanessa held nothing.

Luke said, “You think saving the girl changes what you did?”

Vanessa’s jaw trembled.

“No.”

That surprised me.

“So why bother?”

“Because she deserves one adult who stops lying.”

Sophie looked at her.

Luke laughed.

“You abused her.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Rachel whispered beside me, “At least she said it.”

Vanessa continued.

“I scared her. I grabbed her. I told her things no child should ever hear.”

Luke smiled.

“You want applause?”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

“For her to get out.”

He pointed at Sophie.

“Give me the necklace.”

Sophie shook her head.

Vanessa turned slightly.

“Sophie.”

My daughter flinched.

Vanessa froze.

She slowly lowered herself to her knees.

“Okay.”

Sophie stared.

Vanessa spoke gently.

“I’m not coming closer.”

Silence.

“I’m sorry.”

Luke rolled his eyes.

“Wonderful.”

Vanessa ignored him.

“I told you your dad would stop loving you.”

Sophie’s eyes filled.

“That was a lie.”

“You said Mommy left because I was bad.”

“That was a lie too.”

Sophie whispered, “Why?”

Vanessa started crying.

“Because I was scared and selfish, and I wanted control.”

Sophie said nothing.

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“You didn’t cause any of this.”

Luke shouted, “Enough!”

He grabbed Sophie.

Vanessa jumped up.

Luke swung the gun.

She hit his wrist.

The shot shattered a glass wall.

Tactical officers moved.

Luke grabbed Vanessa by the throat and dragged her backward.

Sophie crawled away.

I saw an opening.

Torres shouted, “Ethan, no!”

I ran through the side corridor.

The conference-room door was ten yards away.

Sophie came through first.

I grabbed her.

“Daddy!”

I pulled her against me.

Behind us, Luke shouted.

Vanessa screamed.

Then officers stormed the room.

Two shots.

Silence.

Rachel took Sophie from me.

I turned back.

Luke lay face down, alive, officers cuffing him.

Vanessa sat against the wall.

Blood spread across her side.

She looked at Sophie.

Not me.

“Sophie okay?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

May you like

“Good.”

Then she collapsed.
