Chapter 6 - MARIAâS REAL REASON

Arthur locked the kitchen door.
âNo more half-truths.â
Maria nodded.
âYouâre right.â
âWhy did you come here?â
She wiped her eyes.
âTo get close to Elena.â
Arthur stared at her.
âYou used my family.â
âAt first.â
âAt first?â
âI wanted proof.â
âYou became my sonâs nanny to investigate my wife?â
âYes.â
Arthur slammed his palm against the counter.
Maria flinched.
âThatâs my child!â
âI know.â
âNo, you donât! Noah loves you.â
âI love him too.â
âYou lied your way into his life.â
Her voice broke.
âI never lied about loving him.â
Arthur paced.
âWho sent you?â
âNo one.â
âRobert?â
âNo. I applied before Robert contacted me.â
âThen how did you even know Elena was involved?â
âMy sister kept a journal.â
Maria reached into her bag.
Arthur tensed.
She pulled out a worn black notebook.
âIsabel wrote down names, transfers, dates.â
Arthur opened it.
The handwriting was small and neat.
Pages of numbers.
Account codes.
Shell companies.
Then he saw a name he recognized.
E. VANCE.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Arthurâs throat tightened.
âWhat is âBlue Crestâ?â
âI donât know.â
Maria pointed to an entry.
âLook at the date.â
Arthur read it.
It was two days before Isabel died.
BLUE CREST PAYMENT â $175,000.
Underneath:
E.V. SAYS ARTHUR CAN NEVER FIND OUT.
Arthur shut the notebook.
âWhy didnât you go to police?â
âI did.â
âWhat happened?â
âThey said a private accounting notebook wasnât proof of murder or fraud.â
âSo you came here.â
âYes.â
Arthur looked toward the ceiling, imagining Noah sleeping upstairs while secrets moved beneath him for years.
âYou shouldâve told me.â
âWould you have believed me?â
He didnât answer.
Maria gave a sad smile.
âThatâs what I thought.â
Arthurâs phone rang.
Detective Brooks.
âMr. Vance, weâre at the hospital. Robert is awake.â
âIâm coming.â
Maria stood.
âIâm going with you.â
âNo.â
âArthurââ
âNoah needs you.â
âYou still trust me with him?â
Arthur looked at her for a long moment.
âI trust that youâd die before hurting him.â
Mariaâs eyes filled.
Arthur continued.
âBut when this is over, weâre going to deal with the fact that you lied to me.â
âI understand.â
At the hospital, Robert looked ten years older.
His left eye was swollen shut.
Arthur sat beside the bed.
âWho did this?â
Robert swallowed.
âI donât know.â
âYou warned me about Elena.â
âI shouldâve warned you years ago.â
Arthur pulled out Isabelâs notebook.
Robertâs visible eye widened.
âYou have it.â
âYou knew about this?â
âYes.â
âBlue Crest. What is it?â
Robert turned pale.
âArthur, listen to me carefully.â
Arthur leaned closer.
Robert lowered his voice.
âBlue Crest isnât a company.â
âWhat is it?â
âItâs a person.â
âWho?â
Robert started to answer.
Then his heart monitor screamed.
His body jerked violently.
Nurses rushed inside.
Arthur stumbled backward.
âRobert!â
A doctor shoved him toward the door.
As Arthur was pushed into the hallway, he saw something taped beneath Robertâs bedside table.
A small yellow note.
May you like
On it were three words:
YOUR FATHER KNOWS.
