Chapter 1 - GET AWAY FROM MY SON

“GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY SON!”

Arthur Vance’s voice hit the marble walls so hard the chandelier seemed to shake.

Elena froze halfway across the living room.

Seven-year-old Noah stood behind her, his small hand locked in hers.

Maria Torres, the family nanny, was on the other side of the room clutching a thick brown envelope to her chest.

Arthur had walked into his own house expecting dinner.

Instead, he found his wife screaming, his nanny crying, his son terrified—and legal documents scattered across the floor.

“What the hell is happening?” Arthur demanded.

Elena turned first.

“Arthur, thank God. Fire her.”

Maria’s face went white.

“Mr. Vance, please. You need to read these.”

“Don’t you dare hand him anything!” Elena snapped.

Arthur looked between them.

“Elena.”

“She went through our private files!”

“I didn’t.”

“She’s lying!”

Maria stepped forward.

“I found paperwork involving Noah’s trust.”

The room went silent.

Arthur’s expression changed instantly.

“What paperwork?”

Elena laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“Oh, please. She doesn’t understand business documents.”

Maria pulled several pages from the envelope.

“I understand a withdrawal authorization.”

Arthur crossed the room.

Elena tried to grab the papers.

Arthur caught her wrist.

“Don’t.”

Her eyes widened.

“You’re hurting me.”

“I said don’t.”

Maria handed him the first page.

Arthur read it.

Then the second.

By the third page, all the color had drained from his face.

“What is this?”

Elena folded her arms.

“Our company needed temporary liquidity.”

“This is Noah’s inheritance trust.”

“It’s family money.”

“No.” Arthur’s voice dropped. “It’s his money.”

Elena rolled her eyes.

“He’s seven.”

Arthur stared at her.

“You authorized a transfer of four hundred thousand dollars.”

“It was temporary.”

“You don’t have access to this account.”

“I’m his mother.”

“You still don’t have access.”

Noah tugged at Arthur’s sleeve.

“Dad?”

Arthur immediately knelt.

“Hey, buddy.”

“Why is Mom mad?”

Arthur swallowed.

“No reason you need to worry about.”

Elena stepped toward them.

“Noah, come with me.”

Arthur rose.

“No.”

Her eyebrows lifted.

“Excuse me?”

“Stay away from him until I understand what you’ve done.”

Elena stared at her husband as if he had slapped her.

“You’d believe a nanny over your own wife?”

Arthur looked at Maria.

Then back at Elena.

“At this moment?”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Elena’s face twisted.

“You’re going to regret saying that.”

Arthur held up the documents.

“If these are real, you’re going to regret a lot more.”

Maria whispered, “There’s another page.”

Arthur looked down.

She handed it to him with trembling fingers.

He read the heading.

PETITION FOR TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP.

His eyes snapped toward Elena.

Under the section marked “Father’s Capacity,” someone had written:

ARTHUR VANCE SUFFERS FROM SEVERE PSYCHOLOGICAL INSTABILITY AND PRESENTS A POTENTIAL DANGER TO THE CHILD.

Arthur slowly raised his eyes.

“What did you do?”

And for the first time that night, Elena smiled.
