Chapter 6 - The Secret Beneath the Portrait

The following morning, Henry asked me to meet him in the grand hall.
He stood beneath the enormous portrait of my grandparents.
"My father always said this painting wasn't placed here for decoration."
Henry carefully pressed one corner of the carved wooden frame.
A hidden compartment slid open inside the wall.
There was only one envelope.
Across the front, my father's handwriting read:
The Sterling Agreement.
I opened it carefully.
Inside lay contracts dating back nearly thirty years.
One signature immediately caught my attention.
My father's.
The second belonged to...
Charles Donovan.
Ryan's father.
I looked up in disbelief.
"They knew each other?"
Henry's face darkened.
"They were once business partners."
My pulse quickened.
"What happened?"
Henry took a slow breath.
"Your father built the company."
"Charles tried to steal it."
"When he failed..."
"He disappeared."
I flipped through the pages.
There were handwritten notes.
Bank transfers.
Court documents that had never been filed.
Then one sentence froze me where I stood.
Charles Donovan agreed that neither he nor his descendants would ever have a legal claim to Carter Holdings.
I whispered,
"Ryan never told me any of this."
Henry looked directly into my eyes.
"Because he was never supposed to know."
The realization hit me like lightning.
Ryan hadn't accidentally entered my life.
His family already knew mine.
Whether Ryan himself knew the truth...
Or whether someone had used him...
Was a question I still couldn't answer.
A sudden alarm echoed through the mansion.
One of the security guards rushed inside.
"Miss Carter."
"You need to see this."
The guard handed me a tablet displaying the front gate camera.
Ryan was gone.
His parents were gone.
But someone else had arrived.
A black sedan with government plates rolled slowly toward the entrance.
The man stepping out carried a federal identification badge in one hand...
And my father's personal signet ring in the other.
"My name is Daniel Brooks," he said into the camera.
"I've been looking for Emily Carter for eighteen years."
May you like
"And I'm here because your father asked me to finish what he started."
