Chapter 4 - The Visitors at the Gate

Ryan stood outside the wrought-iron gates with his parents behind him.
His expensive jacket was soaked by the rain, but he didn't seem to care.
He stared through the bars toward the mansion as though he already owned it.
The attorney beside him adjusted his glasses and held up a leather folder.
"We're here to speak with Mrs. Emily Carter," he announced to the security intercom.
Henry remained perfectly calm.
Standing beneath the covered entrance, he pressed a single button.
"You may state your business."
Ryan forced a smile.
"My wife left in the heat of the moment."
"I'm here to bring my family home."
Henry looked toward me.
"Would you like to receive them, Miss Carter?"
For a long moment, I said nothing.
Then I shook my head.
"No."
Henry nodded once.
"The lady of the house has declined your request."
Ryan's smile disappeared.
"What do you mean, the lady of the house?"
"This is Emily's property?"
His mother laughed.
"Stop joking."
The attorney cleared his throat.
"Sir, according to county property records..."
He opened the folder.
"The estate is legally registered under Emily Carter."
Ryan slowly turned toward him.
"What?"
"It has been in her name for eighteen years."
Silence.
His father grabbed the paperwork.
"That has to be wrong."
The attorney quietly pointed toward the official seal.
"It isn't."
Ryan stared at the mansion again.
For the first time since our marriage...
He realized there were parts of my life he had never known.
Inside the mansion, I watched without satisfaction.
Only clarity.
He hadn't married a wealthy woman.
He had married a woman he never bothered to understand.
Henry calmly instructed security to close the gates.
The iron doors moved together with a deep metallic groan.
Ryan stepped forward.
"Emily!"
"Please!"
"We need to talk!"
I turned away before the gates fully closed.
His voice faded behind me.
For the first time in years...
I didn't feel guilty.
That afternoon, Henry escorted me back to the west study.
"There is something else your father wanted you to find."
He knelt beside the fireplace.
With a quiet click, part of the wooden floor lifted.
Hidden beneath it rested a small steel safe.
The brass key fit perfectly.
Inside were several journals.
A bundle of photographs.
And a flash drive labeled in my father's handwriting.
Only if Ryan returns.
A cold shiver ran through me.
How could my father have predicted this?
Henry answered before I asked.
"Your father believed that people reveal their true character only after they think they've won."
"He prepared for every possibility."
I picked up the flash drive.
May you like
Whatever was inside...
Would change everything.
