Chapter 1: The Door That Should Never Open

Chapter 1: The Door That Should Never Open
The sound of Victoria’s heels stopped outside the nursery door.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The entire room became silent except for the soft breathing of my newborn twins sleeping against Emily’s chest.
I stood between the door and the woman I thought I knew.
My wife.
My children’s mother.
The woman who had built an entire life beside me.
But now, for the first time, I wondered if I had ever truly known her.
Emily looked at me with terrified eyes.
“Sir… please.”
Her voice trembled.
“Do not let her come inside.”
The door handle slowly turned.
My heart raced.
I stepped forward and locked it.
A second later, Victoria knocked.
“Daniel?”
Her voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“Why is the nursery locked?”
I stared at the door.
Then I looked back at Emily.
The woman who had been protecting my children even while she was hurt.
“Because,” I whispered.
“Tonight, I need answers.”
The silence outside lasted three seconds.
Then Victoria spoke again.
But this time…
The kindness disappeared.
“Daniel.”
Her voice became cold.
“Open the door.”
I didn't.
And that was the first time I realized…
May you like
My marriage was already broken.
I just had not known it yet.
