Chapter 1: The Recording That Changed Everything

Richard laughed.
A deep, arrogant laugh.
The kind of laugh from a man who had spent years believing he was untouchable.
He looked at me holding Ethan in my arms and shook his head.
“You’re emotional, Amanda. You always have been.”
I stared at him.
“No. I was blind.”
The room went silent.
Brooke’s smile faded slightly.
Vivian adjusted Chloe’s blanket and looked annoyed.
Richard stepped closer.
“You’re really going to make a scene because my daughter is here?”
I almost couldn’t believe those words.
“My son was forced to crawl on the floor while you sat there drinking bourbon.”
“He was being disciplined.”
“He is four years old.”
“He needs to understand that the world doesn’t revolve around him.”
I looked down at Ethan.
His little arms were wrapped around my neck.
He was still trembling.
And suddenly, every memory came rushing back.
Every time Ethan said, “Daddy is busy.”
Every time Richard canceled plans with him.
Every time he praised other children but ignored his own son.
I had always made excuses.
Not anymore.
I walked toward the hallway camera.
Richard frowned.
“What are you doing?”
I looked up at the tiny blinking light.
“Getting the truth.”
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Because Richard knew.
The camera had captured everything.
I took out my phone and called my attorney.
“Laura, I need you to prepare emergency documents.”
Richard laughed again.
“You’re calling a lawyer because your mother-in-law punished a child?”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“No.”
I tightened my hold on Ethan.
“I’m calling a lawyer because my husband allowed someone to abuse my son.”
Nobody spoke.
For the first time that night…
Richard looked uncertain.

And that was when I knew.
The game had changed.
