Chapter 1: The Woman Who Should Have Been Dead

Chapter 1: The Woman Who Should Have Been Dead

Logan Whitmore thought grief had a timeline.

At first, every morning felt impossible.

He would wake up expecting to hear Mira moving around in the kitchen.

He would turn his head, waiting for her smile.

Then reality would return.

She was gone.

Three years earlier, Logan had buried his wife after what everyone called a tragic accident.

There was a funeral.

There were flowers.

There were hundreds of people telling him how sorry they were.

But nobody understood the hardest part.

Mira was not just his wife.

She was the center of their son Eli’s world.

After losing her, Logan became both parents.

He learned how to braid hair.

How to pack school lunches.

How to answer questions that broke his heart.

“Dad
if Mom is in heaven, can she still see me?”

Every time Eli asked, Logan forced himself to smile.

“Yes, buddy.”

But deep inside, he wondered the same thing.

Three years later, Logan believed he had finally accepted the truth.

Until one Saturday afternoon in downtown Charlotte.

“Dad
”

Eli suddenly stopped walking.

Logan looked down.

“What happened?”

The boy stared across the street.

His face had lost all color.

Then he whispered:

“That woman
”

“That’s Mom.”

Logan almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

But when he looked toward the bookstore wall

His entire body froze.

A woman sat alone on the cold pavement.

Thin.

Exhausted.

Forgotten.

But those eyes

Those eyes belonged to Mira.
