Chapter 15 - WHAT BRADLEY KNEW

Bradley denied knowing about the supplements.
For exactly eleven minutes.
Then investigators played a text message recovered from Barbara's phone backup.
Four years earlier.
BARBARA:
I handled the vitamin issue.
BRADLEY:
You promised it was harmless.
BARBARA:
It is.
BRADLEY:
If Maddie ever finds out, I'm done.
I sat behind the glass.
Bradley covered his face.
Detective Ruiz waited.
Finally, he whispered.
"I didn't know she was pregnant."
Ruiz leaned forward.
"When did you learn?"
"After."
"After the miscarriage?"
"Yes."
"And you kept this from your wife?"
He started crying.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because there was nothing I could do."
I nearly entered the room.
Rachel stopped me.
"He'll hear you later."
I looked at her.
"No."
"He'll hear me now."
Ruiz allowed it.
I sat across from Bradley.
He couldn't look at me.
"You knew."
"Maddie."
"You knew."
"I found out after."
"How long after?"
"A few weeks."
"And you let me blame myself for five years."
He started sobbing.
"I didn't know what to say."
"The truth."
"I was scared."
"The truth."
"I thought you'd leave."
I stared at him.
"You watched me wake up crying."
He covered his face.
"I know."
"You watched me stop going into the nursery."
"I know."
"You watched me ask doctors what I had done wrong."
His shoulders shook.
"I know."
"And every single time, you knew your mother had interfered with something I was taking."
"I didn't know it caused the miscarriage."
"Neither did she."
He looked up.
"It may not have."
"That's not the point."
"I know."
"No."
I leaned forward.
"You still don't."
My voice remained calm.
"Maybe what she switched had nothing to do with losing the pregnancy."
"Maybe it did."
"We may never know."
"But you knew she secretly tampered with something going into my body."
He closed his eyes.
"And you protected her."
He whispered.
"Yes."
That one word ended whatever remained.
Not the affair.
Not the money.
Not the pool.
That.
I stood.
Bradley looked at me.
"Maddie, please."
I stopped at the door.
"There isn't enough apology in the English language for what you did."
Then I walked out.
Within forty-eight hours, everything accelerated.
Barbara was arrested on multiple fraud-related charges.
Frank Delaney was picked up after trying to cross into Canada.
Evan Cole was arrested in Pennsylvania.
Susan entered negotiations for immunity in exchange for testimony.
Bradley was charged with fraud-related offenses and assault from the pool incident.
Trevor and Mason faced lesser charges related to restraining me.
Daniel cooperated fully.
Northstar suspended its acquisition talks.
My board placed me on temporary administrative leave while outside investigators reviewed the allegations against me.
That part hurt.
I had been victimized.
And still, professionally, I had to prove I wasn't part of the fraud.
The board meeting lasted five hours.
At the end, the chair looked at me.
"Maddie, we found no evidence you authorized any of these transactions."
I exhaled for what felt like the first time in days.
"You'll be reinstated immediately."
"Thank you."
Then he surprised me.
"However, we have another issue."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Northstar increased its offer."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
"They believe the public disclosure of the fraud creates an opportunity to close quickly."
"At what valuation?"
He slid a paper toward me.
Fifty-one million dollars.
Rachel stared.
I didn't touch it.
The company I nearly lost was suddenly worth more.
Life had a cruel sense of humor.
I declined the offer.
The board was shocked.
"Why?"
"Because I'm not making the biggest decision of my career while my personal life is burning."
For once, everyone accepted my answer.
That evening, I returned to the house I had shared with Bradley.
Police had cleared it.
I needed clothes.
Documents.
A few personal things.
The house felt dead.
I entered the bedroom.
My side looked untouched.
Bradley's drawers were open.
I pulled out my suitcase.
Then something fell from the top shelf.
A small white box.
I recognized it.
The box from our fertility clinic.
My heart stopped.
Inside was an envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Not Bradley's handwriting.
Barbara's.
I opened it.
There was a letter dated five years earlier.
Maddie,
If you're reading this, then Bradley finally told you.
I sat down.
The letter continued.
What happened wasn't entirely what he thinks.
My hands began shaking.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
May you like
And realized Barbara had kept one last secret.
A secret even Bradley didn't know.
