Chapter 13 - THE STORAGE UNIT

The storage unit smelled like dust, cardboard, and old gasoline.

Detective Ruiz opened it at 7:12 the next morning.

Susan had given police the key.

Inside were seventeen boxes.

Three laptops.

Two external hard drives.

Tax folders.

Bank records.

And one fireproof case.

I stood outside the police tape with Rachel.

Neither of us had spoken much since the night before.

Finally, I looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"Don't."

"I accused you."

"You asked a question."

"I doubted you."

"You should doubt everyone right now."

I looked at her.

She smiled faintly.

"Just don't stay that way forever."

I almost cried.

Almost.

Ruiz emerged holding the fireproof case.

Inside were the original postnup drafts.

My authentic signature pages.

Bradley's real signature pages.

And a second altered agreement.

Someone had physically replaced pages after signing.

That explained everything.

The original agreement protected my company.

The altered version created the misconduct clause Barbara wanted.

Evan Cole had certified the fraudulent copy.

Rachel read the documents.

"This is criminal."

Ruiz nodded.

"It appears so."

The hard drives were even worse.

They contained spreadsheets documenting payments.

Barbara wasn't careless.

She was organized.

Every person had a code.

Bradley was B1.

Susan was S3.

Frank was D4.

Daniel was listed as P2.

And beside my name was a single word.

TARGET.

I stared at it.

Not wife.

Not daughter-in-law.

Not Maddie.

Target.

That hurt in a way I didn't expect.

One spreadsheet showed payments to Evan Cole totaling $180,000.

Another showed $95,000 to Frank Delaney.

Another tracked nearly $1.4 million moved through shell companies.

The theft was larger than anyone thought.

But the most disturbing file was a schedule.

It listed dates.

Arguments.

Family events.

Business trips.

Even my therapy appointments after the miscarriage.

Barbara had tracked my emotional state for years.

Rachel covered her mouth.

"This woman studied you."

I kept scrolling.

There were notes.

LIKELY TIRED.

HIGH WORK STRESS.

ANNIVERSARY OF LOSS.

POSSIBLE TRIGGER.

I felt sick.

The pool weekend was highlighted.

Beside it was a note.

FAMILY PRESSURE / PUBLIC HUMILIATION / ALCOHOL AVAILABLE.

Then another line.

BEST CHANCE FOR PHYSICAL RESPONSE.

I stepped away from the screen.

The cruelty had been engineered.

Not perfectly.

Not scientifically.

But deliberately.

They wanted me ashamed.

Cornered.

Angry.

They wanted me to hit Bradley.

Or Barbara.

Or throw something.

Anything they could put on camera.

Instead, I climbed out quietly.

And that ruined the plan.

Detective Ruiz closed the laptop.

"We have enough to apply for additional warrants."

"Where is Barbara?"

"We believe she's still in New York."

"Why hasn't she run farther?"

Ruiz looked at me.

"Because people like Barbara usually believe they can still fix things."

She was right.

At 10:02 a.m., Barbara called me.

Not the police.

Not Thomas.

Me.

I answered with Ruiz listening.

"Hello?"

"Maddie."

Barbara sounded calm.

Too calm.

"You've caused quite a mess."

I almost smiled.

"I caused it?"

"You involved police."

"You involved fraud."

"Words."

"Crimes."

She sighed.

"You think Bradley is innocent?"

"No."

"Good."

That surprised me.

Barbara continued.

"My son is weak."

I said nothing.

"He wanted Susan."

"He wanted money."

"He wanted freedom."

"And you gave him crimes instead."

Her tone sharpened.

"I gave him options."

"No."

"You gave him instructions."

Silence.

I continued.

"Police found the storage unit."

For the first time, her breathing changed.

"What storage unit?"

I smiled.

There it was.

Fear.

"You should ask Susan."

Barbara went silent.

Then she whispered.

"That stupid little thief."

"Susan isn't your biggest problem."

"What do you want, Maddie?"

"Nothing from you."

"Everybody wants something."

"Not anymore."

She laughed softly.

"You think you're strong because people are standing beside you."

"No."

"I think I'm strong because I finally stopped caring whether your family approves of me."

Barbara's voice changed.

Cold now.

"You will regret humiliating my son."

I stared through the glass at Detective Ruiz.

"Funny."

"What?"

"That's exactly what Bradley said before he pushed me into the pool."

Barbara hung up.

Ruiz looked satisfied.

"Threat recorded."

Then her phone buzzed.

She read a message.

Her expression shifted.

"What?"

"Thomas is missing."

My stomach tightened.

"When?"

"Since early morning."

I called him.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then a photograph arrived on my phone.

Thomas was sitting inside a car.

Barbara sat beside him.

The next message contained four words.

BRING THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.

May you like

And beneath that:

COME ALONE OR YOU LOSE HIM.
