Chapter 14 - CLAIRE’S GRANDSON

Emily called Raymond first.

Not because he owned hospitals.

Because he was family.

“I think he’s coming.”

Raymond was silent for half a second.

Then chaos exploded on his end.

“Do not move.”

“I need to get downstairs.”

“No.”

“Raymond.”

“I’m sending an ambulance.”

“I can drive.”

“You are absolutely not driving.”

Despite the fear, Emily smiled.

Ten minutes later, paramedics arrived.

Twenty-eight minutes after that, she was back at Whitmore-Saint Claire.

But the building felt different now.

No Vanessa.

No Preston.

No humiliation.

Rachel Morgan met her at Labor and Delivery.

Emily recognized her immediately.

“Rachel?”

Rachel smiled.

“Told you I’d be here.”

Contractions intensified.

Dr. Cole arrived.

The baby was early.

But his heartbeat remained strong.

Raymond stood outside the room looking more frightened than Emily had ever seen him.

Arthur Whitmore appeared an hour later.

Raymond stared at him.

“Who called you?”

“Emily.”

Raymond blinked.

Arthur did too.

“She called me.”

Emily had.

Because whatever Preston had done, Arthur was still the baby’s grandfather.

And Emily had decided her son would not inherit hatred simply because he inherited history.

Arthur sat beside Raymond.

Neither man spoke.

Hours passed.

Then a nurse emerged.

Raymond stood so quickly he nearly knocked over his chair.

Arthur rose beside him.

“Emily is fine.”

Both men exhaled.

“And the baby?”

The nurse smiled.

“He’s small.”

Raymond’s face fell.

“But loud.”

A cry came through the doors.

Raymond closed his eyes.

Arthur covered his mouth.

The nurse smiled.

“Congratulations.”

Inside, Emily held her son against her chest.

Tiny.

Warm.

Furious at the world.

Perfect.

Dr. Cole asked,

“Does he have a name?”

Emily looked at him.

She had considered dozens.

Preston Jr. had once been discussed.

Never again.

She thought of her mother.

Claire.

The woman who had left her more than money.

She had left her instructions for living.

Emily touched her son’s cheek.

“Samuel Claire Whitmore.”

Then she paused.

No.

She looked at Dr. Cole.

“Samuel Claire Saint Whitmore.”

A bridge.

Not a weapon.

A reminder that children could carry history without carrying its wars.

Raymond entered.

The moment he saw the baby, the powerful chairman of Saint Claire Health Holdings started crying.

Emily laughed.

“You’re crying.”

“I am not.”

“You absolutely are.”

“Hospital air.”

“Of course.”

Arthur entered more slowly.

He stopped several feet away.

Emily looked at him.

“Would you like to meet your grandson?”

Arthur’s face broke.

“Yes.”

Emily allowed him closer.

Arthur stared down at Samuel.

“He looks like Preston did.”

Emily felt a flicker of pain.

Arthur immediately regretted saying it.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

Emily looked at her son.

“It’s okay.”

Because it was.

Samuel could resemble his father.

He could love his father someday.

Emily would never teach him that Preston was a monster.

She would teach him the truth when he was old enough.

And let Samuel decide what kind of relationship Preston earned.

Raymond touched Emily’s shoulder.

“You did good, kid.”

Emily smiled.

“So did Mom.”

Raymond looked toward the window.

“Yes.”

“She did.”

Outside, dawn began spreading across the city.

But one final decision still waited for Emily.

And it would determine what happened to the Whitmore-Saint Claire name forever.
