Chapter 12 - VANESSA CHOOSES HERSELF

Vanessa had no intention of leaving the country with Preston.
Not anymore.
She arrived at Margaret Hale’s office at 11:20 a.m. carrying a laptop.
“I want immunity.”
Margaret almost smiled.
“This isn’t television.”
“I want protection.”
“From whom?”
“Preston.”
That changed the conversation.
Vanessa placed the laptop on the desk.
“He gave me this six months ago.”
Margaret opened it.
“What’s on it?”
“Everything he didn’t want Emily finding.”
Emails.
Financial spreadsheets.
Photographs.
Messages.
Preston had used Vanessa as more than a mistress.
He had used her apartment as an unofficial office.
Vanessa had enjoyed the secrecy.
Until secrecy became evidence.
Margaret opened a folder.
Inside were projections regarding Emily’s trust.
Estimated valuation.
Potential marital claims.
Custody implications.
Even legal notes about financial guardianship if Emily became “incapacitated.”
Margaret stopped.
“Where did he get this?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you read it before today?”
“Some.”
“And you stayed with him?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I thought he was planning a divorce.”
Margaret turned toward her.
“You attacked a pregnant woman.”
Vanessa flinched.
“I know.”
“No.”
Margaret’s voice sharpened.
“You know it now because consequences arrived.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I was jealous.”
“That isn’t an excuse.”
“I know.”
“Then stop using it like one.”
Vanessa nodded.
For once, she had nothing clever to say.
Margaret continued reviewing the files.
Then she found an audio recording.
“What's this?”
Vanessa looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“I forgot about that.”
Margaret pressed play.
Preston’s voice filled the room.
“If Emily leaves angry enough, I can control the narrative.”
Vanessa’s voice answered.
“And the baby?”
“The baby is leverage.”
Margaret froze.
Preston continued.
“Once he’s born, she won’t risk a custody fight.”
Vanessa laughed softly on the recording.
“You really think she’ll give you money?”
“She’ll give me whatever I ask for if she thinks I can take her son.”
Margaret stopped the recording.
Vanessa looked sick.
“I didn’t understand what he meant.”
Margaret stared at her.
“You understood enough.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
That afternoon, Vanessa gave a formal statement.
She admitted the affair.
Admitted Preston told her Emily’s appointment time.
Admitted he encouraged a confrontation.
And admitted what she had done in the hallway.
She did not excuse it.
For the first time, she simply told the truth.
Meanwhile, Preston was sitting alone inside the penthouse he could no longer afford.
The international tickets had been canceled.
Vanessa had stopped answering.
His company cards were frozen.
His father refused his calls.
Then someone knocked.
Preston opened the door.
Two investigators stood outside.
“Preston Whitmore?”
“Yes.”
“We have questions regarding unauthorized access to protected medical records and misuse of corporate funds.”
Preston’s face went pale.

And for the first time in his life, his last name did not open a door.
It closed one.
