Chapter 7 - The Rules Behind the Door

Grant asked Leah to stay with Rose while he went home.
He told his daughter where he was going and when he expected to return.
“Before dinner?”
“Before dinner. If anything changes, I'll call Nora.”
Rose looked at the clock, then at Nora.
She was checking whether promises had witnesses.
The house felt staged when he walked in.
Wedding gifts lined the dining room wall.
Vanessa's suitcase waited beside the stairs, ready for the honeymoon.
His housekeeper, Marta, handed him the chart without speaking.
No calling out after bedtime.
No interrupting grown-ups.
No crying to get attention.
Ask before touching Mommy.
Along the bottom was a row of empty boxes labeled SPECIAL TIME.
Rose had drawn a tiny heart inside each one.
None had a star.
“I thought it was a reward chart,” Marta said.
“Then I read it.”
Grant photographed the paper where Marta had found it and kept the original for Ruiz.
He didn't ask Marta to guess about things she'd never seen.
He asked her to write down what she remembered and speak directly to the detective.
Upstairs, he found Rose's drawings in a desk drawer.
Three people holding hands.
Then two tall people and a smaller figure standing farther away.
Then a picture with the little figure carefully erased.
He sat on the bedroom floor.
There had been no secret basement.
No elaborate disguise.
The evidence had been hanging behind his daughter's door while he congratulated himself on building a family.
His phone rang.
Vanessa.
He let it go to voicemail.
“Grant, this has gotten completely out of control. You know Rose gets attached. You know how demanding she can be. I was trying to set boundaries you never bothered to set.”
He saved the message.
Then another arrived.
“You can't raise a child by giving her whatever she wants just because her mother died.”
Grant stood so abruptly the bedside lamp shook.
He wanted to call back.
He wanted her to hear what he finally understood.
Instead, he called his attorney and arranged for Vanessa's belongings to be collected without bringing her near Rose.
At the hospital, Rose checked the clock when he returned.
“You did it.”
“Did what?”
“Came back.”
He sat beside her with the rabbit in his lap.

She touched its ear, then asked a question that made everything in him go still.
“Did my first mommy leave because I cried, too?”
