Chapter 11 - His Own Voice

Grant played the message once more.
Not because he hadn't heard it.
Because he had.
He remembered the day.
Rose had refused to stay with Vanessa while Nora took an afternoon off.
Grant had been waiting to board a plane.
Vanessa had called it a power struggle.
He'd sent a quick reply and put his phone away.
In the morning, he asked Nora about it.
She stood at the kitchen sink for several seconds before turning.
“I didn't repeat that to Rose.”
Relief struck him so hard it almost made him dizzy.
Then Nora finished.
“But Vanessa was standing beside me when I played it. She heard you.”
He sat down.
“I gave her permission.”
“You didn't give her permission to hurt a child.”
“I told her I wouldn't listen.”
Nora pulled out the chair opposite him.
“Then start listening. And keep doing it when this stops being an emergency.”
That afternoon, Rose met a child therapist named Marisol.
Grant waited while his daughter chose toy animals and inspected a dollhouse.
Later, Marisol spoke with him privately.
“Don't ask her to make you feel better about what happened,” she said.
“Apologize in simple words. Follow through. Let her have feelings that are inconvenient.”
He wrote that last sentence in his phone.
At dinner, Rose didn't want chicken.
It was the smallest possible disagreement.
Her shoulders rose as soon as she said it.
Grant put down his fork.
“Okay. You can eat the rice and peas.”
“You're not mad?”
“No.”
“What if I don't like peas?”
Nora hid a smile behind her water glass.
Grant felt something painful and hopeful loosen in his chest.
“Then we're having quite a conversation about dinner.”
For the first time since the hospital, Rose laughed.
It lasted half a second.
It was enough to make him put both feet on the floor and stay present.
Later, she climbed onto the couch beside him.
“Did you want her more?”
He didn't pretend not to understand.
“I paid attention to her when I should have been paying attention to you. I'm sorry.”
“If you get another wedding, do I have to go away?”
“No. This is your home.”
May you like
Rose picked at the couch seam.
“She said there would be a school. With beds. After the trip.”
