Chapter 14 - THE GATE

The shot deafened Ethan.

For half a second he thought he’d been hit.

Then Mercer collapsed.

The bullet had struck the wall.

Knox rushed forward and kicked the gun away.

“Stay down!”

Mercer groaned.

Ethan leaned against the wall, touching his neck.

No blood.

He laughed once.

Then again.

Knox looked at him like he was insane.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“You stole my line.”

Knox cuffed Mercer.

Within minutes, the administrative wing filled with officers.

This time, officers Knox trusted.

Claire ran down the hallway the moment they cleared it.

She slammed into Ethan.

“Don’t ever do that again!”

He held her.

“I’ll put it on my calendar.”

She hit his chest.

“I’m serious!”

“I know.”

Rosie reached for him.

Ethan took her.

She immediately grabbed his nose.

He laughed.

“You trying to kill me too?”

Rosie giggled.

By midnight, Mercer was in federal custody.

By sunrise, Ray Damon had signed a full confession.

The conspiracy was uglier than anyone expected.

Ray had been moving stolen pharmaceuticals through several warehouses.

Detective Harris erased evidence.

Mercer protected people inside Graystone.

District Attorney Thomas Vance had quietly shut down investigations that got too close.

Marcus Reed had been sent to threaten Ethan.

The shooting itself had been an accident.

The cover-up was not.

At 9:13 the next morning, Dana walked into the prison conference room with a piece of paper.

Ethan stood.

“Well?”

She tried to stay professional.

She failed.

Her smile gave it away.

“All charges dismissed.”

Claire started crying.

Ethan didn’t react.

He couldn’t.

His mind had heard the words.

His body hadn’t.

Dana walked closer.

“You’re free, Ethan.”

He stared at her.

“Say it again.”

“You’re free.”

His knees nearly buckled.

Two hours later, officers returned the clothes he wore the night he entered prison.

Jeans.

Brown boots.

A faded blue shirt Claire had bought him.

The shirt was too tight now.

Knox looked him over.

“You look terrible.”

“Still ugly?”

“Worse.”

Ethan laughed.

Then held out his hand.

Knox stared at it.

Finally, he shook it.

“You saved my life.”

Knox shrugged.

“Paperwork was easier this way.”

Ethan smiled.

Then his face became serious.

“Thank you.”

Knox nodded once.

“That little girl doesn’t need to come back here.”

“She won’t.”

“Make sure of it.”

Ethan walked down the final corridor.

One gate opened.

Then another.

Then another.

Every buzz sounded different now.

He reached the last door.

A guard pressed a button.

Steel rolled aside.

Sunlight hit Ethan’s face.

Across the parking lot stood Claire.

Rosie sat on her shoulders.

Dana stood beside them.

Claire didn’t wave.

She just stared.

Like she was afraid the door might close again.

Ethan stepped outside.

The gate shut behind him.

Rosie saw him.

“DADA!”

Ethan started walking.

Then jogging.

Then running.

Claire ran too.

Rosie laughed wildly on her hip.

They met in the middle of the parking lot.

Ethan wrapped both of them in his arms.

No glass.

No phone.

No clock counting down.

No officer saying time was up.

Claire kissed him.

“You’re home.”

Ethan pressed his forehead against hers.

“I’m home.”

Then Dana’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her smile disappeared.

Ethan noticed.

“What?”

Dana said nothing.

“Dana.”

She slowly lowered the phone.

“They arrested Vance.”

Claire exhaled.

“That’s good.”

Dana looked at Ethan.

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“They found files in his house.”

“What kind of files?”

Dana swallowed.

“Other cases.”

Ethan stared at her.

“How many?”

“Thirty-seven.”

He looked back at Graystone.

Thirty-seven names.

Thirty-seven families.

Thirty-seven people who might have been screaming the same thing he had screamed for years.

I didn’t do it.

Ethan looked at Rosie.

Then Claire.

His freedom suddenly felt heavier.

May you like

Because now he knew something he could never unknow.

He wasn’t the only one.
