Chapter 8 - The Grave With My Name On It

My family had buried me eleven years ago.

Not literally.

At least, that was what I thought.

Arthur took us to a private section of the Vale family cemetery before sunrise.

Rain fell softly across the headstones.

We stopped beneath an old oak tree.

And there it was.

CELESTE ELEANOR VALE.

Beloved Daughter.

1994–2018.

I stared at my own grave.

“You buried an empty coffin?”

Arthur nodded.

“Why?”

“Hale needed to believe you were permanently disconnected from us.”

“So you staged my death?”

“Officially, no.”

He looked ashamed.

“Socially, yes.”

I walked toward the stone.

Someone had left flowers there recently.

“Who comes here?”

Arthur said nothing.

“Who?”

“Me.”

That hurt more than I expected.

I turned away.

“Where’s the evidence?”

Arthur approached the headstone.

“Eleanor chose the location.”

He knelt and pressed a hidden latch beneath the stone border.

A narrow metal compartment opened.

Inside was a waterproof case.

My mother’s initials were engraved on the top.

E.V.

I touched them.

For a moment, I was twenty-four again.

Angry.

Lost.

Begging my mother to choose me over Arthur.

I had spent years believing she hadn’t.

I opened the case.

Inside were three encrypted drives.

A handwritten letter rested above them.

My name was on it.

I unfolded it.

Celeste,

If you are reading this, then you survived all of us.

I had to stop.

Grant touched my shoulder.

I continued.

I am sorry I allowed fear to make decisions that love should have made.

Your father believes power can protect people.

He is wrong.

Truth is the only protection that lasts.

Meridian must end.

Do not save our name.

Save the people our name has hurt.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Arthur turned away.

Grant wiped his eyes.

Even Vivian was silent.

Then Admiral Reed’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?”

He listened.

“When?”

Another pause.

“We’re coming.”

He hung up.

“What happened?” I asked.

Reed looked at Arthur.

“Secretary Hale knows you’re cooperating.”

Arthur went still.

Reed continued.

“And he just issued an emergency order accusing Commander Celeste Vale of stealing classified military intelligence.”

I almost laughed.

Grant didn’t.

“What does that mean?”

Reed looked at me.

“It means Hale is trying to arrest Celeste before those drives reach a courtroom.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Can he?”

Reed’s answer was quiet.

“He’s the Secretary of Defense.”

I handed the drives to him.

“Then we move faster.”

Reed shook his head.

“It’s not that simple.”

Sirens appeared beyond the cemetery gates.

Black government vehicles turned onto the road.

Arthur stared at me.

“What do we do?”

I looked at my own grave.

Then at my mother’s letter.

For eleven years, my family had survived by hiding.

That ended now.

“We stop running.”
