Chapter 12 - Eleanor’s Final Secret

The final piece of evidence came from someone we thought was dead.
My mother.
Not physically.
Her voice.
Investigators discovered one final encrypted recording on the third drive.
It had been scheduled for delivery if she failed to contact an attorney.
For reasons nobody could explain, it had never been sent.
Until now.
The courtroom speakers crackled.
Then I heard her.
“My name is Eleanor Vale.”
My hands began trembling.
Vivian grabbed one.
Grant took the other.
“I am recording this because I no longer believe my family is safe.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Project Meridian has compromised shipping networks, government contracts, and defense procurement.”
She listed names.
Hale.
Pierce.
Arthur.
Others.
Then her voice softened.
“My husband is guilty.”
Arthur lowered his head.
“But he is not the architect.”
Hale stopped writing.
“Jonathan Hale authorized the conversion of Meridian from a commercial tracking system into a covert smuggling network.”
The jury stared at him.
Then came the final revelation.
“If anything happens to me, investigate Dr. Stephen Carr at the Helvetia Clinic.”
Arthur’s head snapped up.
The clinic where my mother died.
Federal investigators already had.
Dr. Carr had received $2.4 million through a company controlled by Pierce.
Three days after my mother’s death.
Hale’s face finally changed.
The prosecution rested.
Two days later, the jury returned.
Guilty.
Hale closed his eyes.
Pierce stared at the floor.
Arthur did not celebrate.
Neither did I.
Justice is not celebration.
May you like
It is accounting.
And after seventeen years, the bill had finally arrived.
