CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Danielle Tried To Bury

The next morning, Marcus started searching for answers.
Something about Danielle’s reaction bothered him.
It wasn’t the reaction of a mother protecting her child.
It was the reaction of someone afraid of being exposed.
He began looking through old documents, medical records, and family files.
Then he found something hidden inside Danielle’s locked drawer.
An old envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of a baby.
And beside the baby was Marcus.
His hands went cold.
He stared at the picture for several seconds before he could breathe.
The baby was Amara.
Impossible.
He remembered meeting Danielle years ago.
He remembered the night she told him she had lost the baby.
She said the child had died.
She cried.
She blamed herself.
And Marcus believed her.
But now…
he was holding proof that everything had been a lie.
When Danielle returned home, she found Marcus standing in the living room with the photo in his hand.
Her face turned pale.
“Where did you find that?”
Marcus’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You told me my daughter was dead.”
Danielle said nothing.
“You let me believe I lost her.”
Her lips trembled.
“Marcus…”
“No.”
His voice became colder.
“You took years away from me.”
Danielle’s eyes filled with panic.
“I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
She looked away.
“Of losing you.”
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Marcus laughed quietly, but there was no happiness in it.
“So you stole my daughter because you were afraid I would leave?”
Danielle started crying.
“I loved you.”
Marcus looked at her.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You loved having control.”
At that moment, Amara appeared at the stairs.
She had heard everything.
Her eyes moved between Marcus and Danielle.
“Daddy?”
The word was barely a whisper.
But it broke something inside Marcus.
He walked toward her and knelt down.
“Yes, Amara.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“I’m your dad.”
For the first time in her life…
Amara smiled.
Not a fake smile.
Not a smile to make someone happy.
A real one.
And Danielle realized the truth.
She had spent years trying to keep Marcus away from Amara.
