CHAPTER 1 — The Truth Behind Amara’s Tears

The room remained frozen after Amara ran into Marcus’s arms.

For years, everyone had seen Danielle as the perfect mother.

Elegant.

Successful.

Respected.

She was the woman who smiled for cameras, donated to charities, and told everyone how much she loved her daughter.

But no one had ever seen what happened behind closed doors.

No one had seen Amara standing alone in her bedroom, holding her bunny every night, wondering why her mother never hugged her the way other mothers did.

Marcus looked down at the little girl trembling against him.

She wasn't crying loudly anymore.

She had already learned that crying never brought Danielle back.

That was what hurt him the most.

A child that young had already learned how to stop asking for love.

“Amara,” Marcus whispered gently, “look at me.”

Slowly, the girl lifted her eyes.

“Did your mother say those words to you before?”

Amara hesitated.

Her small fingers tightened around her bunny.

“Sometimes…”

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Sometimes she says I’m not special.”

The entire room went silent.

Danielle immediately stepped forward.

“Marcus, you don’t understand. She’s emotional. She’s been difficult lately.”

Marcus turned toward her.

For the first time, Danielle saw something she had never seen before.

Disappointment.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Disappointment.

“You expect me to believe a six-year-old child is the problem?”

Danielle’s expression changed.

“She’s not your responsibility.”

Marcus looked back at Amara.

Then he said something that made everyone in the room stop breathing.

“Maybe not.”

A pause.

“But she’s a child.”

He looked directly at Danielle.

“And someone has to protect her.”

That night, Marcus refused to leave Amara alone.

He sat beside her bed as she slowly fell asleep, still holding her bunny.

But before she closed her eyes, she whispered something that changed everything.

“Mr. Marcus…”

“Yes?”

“Can I call you Dad?”

Marcus froze.

Because he had never been a father.

he realized someone had already chosen him.
