Chapter 5 - DANIEL’S LAST EMAIL

Rachel stared at Claire.

“What did you say?”

Claire looked terrified.

“I wasn’t supposed to know.”

Victor stepped toward her.

“Stop talking.”

Claire backed away.

“No.”

“Claire.”

“You said nobody would get hurt.”

The ballroom fell silent again.

Rachel moved closer.

“What did he tell you to do?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears, but she didn’t break down.

“He told me to arrange tonight.”

“The gala?”

“The trust committee meeting.”

Rachel understood.

“This was never about the foundation.”

Claire shook her head.

“He wanted the committee to remove you as co-trustee tonight.”

Victor’s attorney grabbed his arm.

“Do not respond.”

Rachel looked at Victor.

“Why tonight?”

Thomas answered.

“Because Emily turns nine next month.”

Rachel turned.

“What does that change?”

Thomas took a breath.

“Daniel’s trust has a trigger.”

“What trigger?”

“At Emily’s ninth birthday, the independent audit rights transfer permanently to the surviving trustee acting on her behalf.”

Rachel stared at him.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

“And if they removed me before then?”

“Victor would become temporary controlling trustee.”

Rachel finally saw the whole shape of the trap.

The rumors.

The isolation.

The accusations about her grief.

Tonight’s staged theft.

Victor wasn’t merely humiliating Emily.

He was creating evidence that Rachel was incapable of supervising her own daughter.

A child accused of stealing a family heirloom.

A grieving mother losing control.

A public scandal.

All conveniently witnessed by the trust committee.

“You planned this.”

Victor said nothing.

Rachel’s voice hardened.

“You used my daughter to steal her inheritance.”

“No,” Thomas said quietly.

Rachel looked at him.

“It’s bigger than her inheritance.”

Thomas reached inside his jacket.

He removed an old phone.

“Daniel sent me an email the night he died.”

Rachel’s breath caught.

“What email?”

“I deleted it.”

Her expression changed.

Thomas quickly continued.

“I thought I did.”

He unlocked the phone.

“Last month, my daughter recovered an old cloud backup.”

Victor moved toward him.

Owen blocked his path.

Thomas opened a screenshot.

Rachel read the timestamp.

11:38 p.m.

Forty-three minutes before Daniel’s estimated time of death.

The email contained only two lines.

Tom, I was right about Victor.

If anything happens to me, check the Ellison account. Rachel must protect Emily.

Rachel’s hands began trembling.

“The Ellison account?”

Thomas nodded.

“I didn’t understand it then.”

Rachel looked around the ballroom.

Grand Ellison Hotel.

Victor’s face told her he understood.

Thomas continued.

“Daniel wasn’t referring to the hotel.”

“Then what?”

“A private account under Ellison Strategic Holdings.”

Claire suddenly covered her mouth.

Rachel noticed.

“You know that name.”

Claire didn’t answer.

“Claire.”

She looked at Victor.

Then whispered,

“I’ve been sending documents there for six years.”

Victor’s attorney closed his eyes.

Rachel stepped closer.

“What documents?”

Claire’s voice barely carried.

“Transfers.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who authorized them?”

Claire looked directly at Victor.

“He did.”

Before anyone could respond, the ballroom doors opened.

Two NYPD detectives entered with three uniformed officers.

Behind them was another man Rachel recognized immediately.

Detective Samuel Grant.

The detective who had investigated Daniel’s death.

Grant looked older.

And deeply uncomfortable.

He walked directly toward Rachel.

“Mrs. Bennett.”

She stared at him.

“You told me my husband died alone.”

Grant looked at Victor.

Then at the ring in Victor’s hand.

“I know.”

Rachel’s voice became cold.

“Were you wrong?”

Grant hesitated.

“No.”

May you like

Rachel’s stomach dropped.

“I lied.”
