Chapter 14 - THE TRIAL

Nine months later, the courtroom was full.

Victor Bennett pleaded guilty before the murder trial could begin.

Manslaughter.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Witness intimidation.

Evidence tampering.

Attempted theft.

Charles refused a deal.

He went to trial.

Claire testified for four days.

Thomas testified for two.

Grant admitted publicly that he had concealed evidence after being blackmailed.

He resigned from the police department before internal affairs could remove him.

But his testimony helped prosecutors reconstruct Daniel’s final night.

Daniel confronted Victor about the stolen foundation money.

Victor demanded the copied ledger.

They argued.

Victor shoved Daniel.

Daniel fell from the dock.

He surfaced.

Victor reached toward him.

Then Charles stopped his son.

If Daniel survived, everything would come out.

The fraud.

The shell companies.

The stolen millions.

So they waited.

Daniel disappeared beneath the water.

Victor took the signet ring afterward.

Not as a trophy.

That would have been simpler.

He took it because Daniel had scratched Victor’s face during the argument, and Victor believed the ring might contain his blood.

Years later, arrogance convinced him it was safe to wear.

Laura Morgan witnessed enough to understand what had happened.

She tried to expose them.

Three months later, she died when someone tampered with her car.

Prosecutors could not prove Victor personally arranged it.

But they proved Charles paid the mechanic through one of the same shell companies.

Charles Bennett was convicted.

The foundation board removed every member connected to him.

More than thirty-six million dollars was recovered.

Assets were seized.

Properties were sold.

Accounts were frozen.

And Emily’s trust remained untouched.

Rachel was confirmed as sole trustee.

But the moment Rachel remembered most didn’t happen inside the courtroom.

It happened afterward.

Emily stood on the courthouse steps wearing the same pale blue dress Daniel had bought years earlier.

It was getting short now.

She was growing.

Rachel looked at her.

“You know we can buy you another dress.”

Emily smiled.

“I know.”

“You don’t have to keep wearing Daddy’s.”

“I want to today.”

Rachel understood.

Thomas joined them.

He handed Emily a small velvet box.

“What’s this?”

“Something that belongs to you.”

Emily opened it.

Inside was Daniel’s silver signet ring.

Police had released it after the case ended.

Emily touched the engraved oak tree.

“Was Daddy wearing this when he died?”

Rachel nodded.

Emily looked at the ring for a long time.

Then closed the box.

“I don’t want to wear it.”

Rachel was surprised.

“No?”

Emily shook her head.

“I want to keep it with the music box.”

Thomas smiled.

“That sounds like a good place.”

Emily looked toward Rachel.

“Can we fix the music box?”

Rachel felt tears come.

This time she didn’t fight them.

“Yes.”

Emily smiled.

“Good.”

Then she took her mother’s hand.

And together they walked down the courthouse steps.
