Chapter 2: The Recording Nobody Could Erase

The hospital was silent that night.
Sarah lay in bed, surrounded by machines monitoring her and the baby.
Daniel refused to leave her side.
The doctors said the baby was stable.
But the fall had been serious.
Sarah had suffered injuries that could have changed everything.
Daniel sat beside her, holding her hand.
“I should have been there.”
Sarah looked at him.
“This wasn’t your fault.”
But Daniel shook his head.
“I promised I would protect you.”
Sarah squeezed his hand.
“You did.”
Then Daniel looked at the phone sitting on the table.
The recording.
The evidence.
The truth.
Before going to the hospital, he had listened to everything.
Not just the fall.
Everything before it.
Jason’s jealousy.
His anger.
His intention.
And worst of all...
Their father knew.
The recording captured every word.
Jason saying:
“She needs to learn her place.”
Their father replying:
“Don’t worry. Nobody will believe her.”
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
They weren’t protecting Jason after an accident.
They were protecting him because they planned to hide what happened.
The next morning, Daniel returned to the house.
But this time, he wasn’t the same man who walked in scared.
He walked in prepared.
Jason was sitting in the living room.
His father beside him.
Both looked confident.
“You’re causing unnecessary drama,” Jason said.
Daniel said nothing.
He placed the phone on the table.
Then pressed play.
The room filled with Jason’s voice.
Everyone became silent.
Jason’s face changed.
“Turn that off.”
Daniel didn’t move.
Then their father stood up.
“You recorded a private conversation?”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
He pointed at the staircase.
“My wife’s phone recorded the truth.”
Jason stepped forward.
“You think anyone will believe that?”
Daniel smiled slightly.
“The hospital already reported the injuries.”
Then he placed another document on the table.
“The police have the recording.”
Jason’s confidence disappeared.
For the first time, he understood.
He wasn’t protected anymore.
Their father tried one final excuse.
“It was just a family argument.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“It was an attack on a pregnant woman.”
The police arrived later that afternoon.
Jason was arrested.
But before they took him away, he looked at Sarah.
And for a moment...
He looked almost sorry.
Almost.

But Sarah knew the truth.
Some people only regret their actions when they finally face consequences.
