Chapter 12 - THE MAN ABOVE MERCER

Raymond survived.
Barely.
Logan was arrested.
Captain Sloan disappeared before federal agents could reach him.
And by sunrise, every major news network in America had the Mercer story.
But Ethan knew they were not finished.
Not even close.
Claire entered the hospital conference room carrying a folder.
“Raymond named Senator Adrian Vale.”
Marcus frowned.
“The intelligence committee chairman?”
Claire nodded.
Grace sat near the window.
“You’re saying a U.S. senator ran Keystone?”
“We’re saying Mercer claims he did.”
Ethan looked at the evidence.
Vale.
Three-term senator.
Former prosecutor.
Presidential rumors.
A man Ethan had personally met twice.
“Why?”
Claire said, “Power.”
“Too simple.”
“Power usually is.”
Dana entered.
“Found something.”
She placed a laptop down.
“Remember the files that labeled Ethan an active asset?”
“Yes.”
“The authorization signatures weren’t Mercer’s.”
She showed them.
A digital key.
A.V.
Grace whispered, “Adrian Vale.”
Claire nodded.
“And the activation order on Grace came from the same key.”
Ethan stood.
“He ordered the attack on her.”
“Looks that way.”
Marcus asked, “Why now?”
Grace answered.
“Because I found the spreadsheet.”
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“Logan didn’t invite me just because of Mom’s letter.”
Ethan frowned.
“What are you saying?”
“He wanted me there for another reason.”
Grace explained.
Two weeks earlier, she had received anonymous emails about Mercer Global.
Financial discrepancies.
Offshore accounts.
She assumed they were related to a university research project.
She had asked Logan about them.
“He realized I was looking at the same accounts Mom had found.”
Ethan stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Grace gave him a look.
“Because apparently hiding dangerous information from family runs in ours.”
Marcus looked away to hide a smile.
Ethan sighed.
“Fair.”
Claire’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She listened.
Then looked at Ethan.
“Senator Vale is holding a press conference in forty minutes.”
“What about?”
“You.”
The television came on.
Vale stood behind a podium.
Cameras everywhere.
“My fellow Americans, last night we witnessed a disturbing example of private military power operating outside the law.”
Grace stared.
“He means Dad.”
Vale continued.
“Mr. Ethan Cole used an armed corporate force to attack private citizens, interfere with police operations, and manipulate federal authorities.”
Ethan laughed quietly.
“He’s getting ahead of it.”
Claire nodded.
Vale said, “I am calling for an immediate congressional investigation into Cole Strategic Security.”
Marcus cursed.
Grace turned.
“So what do we do?”
Ethan picked up the folder.
“We don’t defend.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“We attack.”
“Ethan.”
“He wants this public?”
Ethan looked at the television.
“Fine.”
“What are you planning?”
Ethan smiled.
“A press conference.”
Grace’s eyes widened.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“You hate reporters.”
“I also hate senators who threaten my daughter.”
Forty-five minutes later, Ethan stood before cameras outside federal court.
Questions exploded.
He raised one hand.
Silence gradually came.
“My name is Ethan Cole.”
Cameras zoomed in.
“Last night my daughter was threatened, detained, and assaulted inside the Mercer estate.”
Reporters shouted.
He continued.
“We now possess evidence connecting Raymond Mercer to years of bribery, blackmail, obstruction, and homicide.”
The crowd erupted.
Then Ethan looked directly into the camera.
“And we possess evidence that Senator Adrian Vale authorized operations connected to those crimes.”
Silence.
Every camera was live.
Ethan held up a drive.
“This evidence will be released publicly if anything happens to my daughter, my team, or me.”
Across the city, Senator Vale watched the broadcast.
His face remained calm.
He picked up a phone.
“Execute Phase Two.”
A man on the other end answered.
“What target?”
May you like
Vale watched Grace standing behind her father.
“All of them.”
