Chapter 1 - THE WRONG GIRL

The first thing Ethan Cole heard was his daughter scream.

The second thing he heard was a man say, “Nobody’s coming for you.”

That was when Ethan kicked the mansion door open.

The heavy oak door slammed against the wall hard enough to crack the plaster.

Everyone inside froze.

At the far end of the marble living room, twenty-two-year-old Grace Cole was curled against the bottom of a staircase, one hand shielding her face.

Her dress was torn at the shoulder.

Her cheek was red.

Her breathing came in short, terrified bursts.

Standing over her was Logan Mercer.

Twenty-six.

Rich.

Drunk.

Angry.

And stupid enough to believe his father’s money made him untouchable.

Logan turned toward the sound.

“Who the hell are—”

Ethan crossed the room before he could finish.

Grace looked up.

“Dad?”

That one word changed Ethan’s face.

He had spent twenty-seven years learning how not to lose control.

Military deployments.

Hostage negotiations.

Security operations.

Boardrooms filled with men who lied for a living.

None of it mattered now.

His daughter was on the floor.

Ethan stopped six feet from Logan.

“What did you do to her?”

Logan glanced at Grace and gave a crooked smile.

“Family misunderstanding.”

Grace whispered, “Dad, don’t.”

Logan laughed.

“See? She knows she screwed up.”

Ethan’s eyes settled on him.

“What did you say?”

“I said your daughter—”

Ethan grabbed him by the shirt.

Logan barely had time to gasp.

Ethan drove him backward.

His body crashed onto the glass coffee table.

The entire thing exploded beneath him.

Glass scattered across the marble.

Logan screamed.

Two men near the kitchen rushed forward.

Ethan turned his head.

“Take one more step.”

They stopped.

Something in his voice told them they were not dealing with an angry suburban father.

Ethan crouched beside Grace.

His anger disappeared instantly.

“Baby. Look at me.”

Grace’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you weren’t coming.”

“I’m here now.”

“He took my keys.”

“Okay.”

“He locked the front gate.”

Ethan glanced toward Logan.

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because I drove through it.”

Despite everything, Grace almost laughed.

Then she grabbed his sleeve.

“Dad, please. I just want to go home.”

“We’re going home.”

“No cops.”

Ethan studied her face.

“Why?”

Grace looked toward the shattered remains of a phone near the fireplace.

“He broke my phone.”

Ethan followed her gaze.

“So?”

“It was recording.”

His eyes narrowed.

Grace lowered her voice.

“It recorded everything.”

Behind them, Logan stopped groaning.

Ethan looked over his shoulder.

For the first time since he entered the mansion, Logan looked afraid.

“What exactly did it record?” Ethan asked.

Grace swallowed.

“Not just what he did to me.”

She looked at Logan.

“It recorded what he confessed.”

Logan suddenly lunged off the floor.

“Give me that phone!”

Ethan moved.

One second Logan was charging toward Grace.

The next, Ethan had him face-down against the marble.

Logan screamed.

“Get off me!”

Ethan pulled a small radio from inside his jacket.

Grace stared at it.

“Dad…”

He pressed the button.

“This is Cole.”

Static answered.

Ethan’s voice became ice.

“Code Black.”

There was a pause.

Then a voice responded.

“Confirm Code Black.”

Ethan looked directly at Logan.

“Confirmed.”

Outside, somewhere beyond the broken gate, engines began to roar.

Logan’s face went white.

May you like

And Grace whispered the question everyone in the room suddenly wanted answered.

“Dad… who did you call?”
