Chapter 3 – Thirty Years of Lies

Less than an hour later...
The hotel's security office was overflowing.
Police officers.
Detectives.
Hotel management.
Several witnesses.
Even Preston's new bride sat silently in the corner, her wedding veil still covering her shoulders.
The surveillance footage began to play.
Camera One.
Sophie never left her mother's side.
Camera Three.
Preston slipped away from the head table.
He glanced around.
Made sure no one was watching.
Then casually approached Sophie's tiny denim jacket hanging on the back of her chair.
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out his titanium iPhone.
Slipped it into the child's jacket.
Walked away smiling.
The room became deathly silent.
Then Camera Five played.
Preston grabbed the microphone.
Pretended to search.
Pretended to panic.
Then marched directly toward Sophie.
Every second had been planned.
Every accusation rehearsed.
But the final recording destroyed him completely.
Camera Two.
Audio enabled.
It captured him muttering under his breath before the confrontation.
"Now everyone will finally see what Evelyn really is."
The detective paused the video.
"No."
He looked directly at Preston.
"They just saw who you are."
His bride slowly removed her wedding ring.
A single tear rolled down her cheek.
"You used me..."
"You used this wedding..."
"...to destroy your own niece."
She placed the ring on the table.
"I'm done."
Without another word, she walked out.
The ballroom that had been prepared for dancing became a crime scene.
Officers handcuffed Preston in complete silence.
His parents rushed forward.
"There must be some misunderstanding!"
"Our son would never—"
The detective interrupted.
"We have six camera angles."
"We have audio."
"And we have over two hundred witnesses."
"There is no misunderstanding."
