Chapter 2 – The Camera Never Blinked

For the first time that night...

The color drained from Preston's face.

His confident smile disappeared, replaced by something he had never learned to hide.

Fear.

The ballroom remained frozen as the distant police sirens grew louder outside the Whitmore Hotel.

Evelyn cradled Sophie in her arms while pressing a napkin against the wound on her daughter's head.

"Please stay awake, sweetheart."

Sophie's eyelids fluttered.

"I didn't steal it..."

"I know, baby."

Across the room, Preston suddenly found his voice.

"She's bluffing."

He forced out a laugh that sounded painfully hollow.

"The camera doesn't show anything."

"It only records the entrance."

His words came too quickly.

Too confidently.

Too rehearsed.

Evelyn didn't answer.

She simply looked toward the ballroom entrance.

Toward the tiny red light still blinking above the doorway.

One of the hotel managers hurried inside, followed by two security officers.

"What happened here?" he demanded.

Several guests immediately began talking over one another.

"It was an accident."

"The little girl attacked him."

"No..."

"He hit her!"

The stories collided into chaos.

Then an elderly man slowly stood from one of the back tables.

Judge Harold Benson.

A retired federal judge who had known the Whitmore family for years.

"I saw enough."

His calm voice silenced the room.

"The child never attacked anyone."

Every head turned.

Preston swallowed hard.

The judge continued.

"But opinions don't matter."

"The cameras do."

The hotel manager nodded immediately.

"Our ballroom has six synchronized security cameras."

"They record both video and audio."

Preston's knees almost buckled.

Audio.

He hadn't known about the audio.

Within minutes, paramedics rushed inside.

As they carefully lifted Sophie onto a stretcher, she reached for her mother.

"Don't leave me..."

"I'm right here."

Evelyn kissed her forehead before following the stretcher toward the ambulance.

Just before disappearing through the ballroom doors, she turned back.

"You still have time to tell the truth, Preston."

He said nothing.

May you like

Because for the first time in his life...

The truth was no longer under his control.
